MSSE Instructor Non‑Tenure Track Faculty (Applicant Pool)

Position Overview: The MSSE Instructor position is a non‑tenure track instructor position for the Master of Science in Science Education (MSSE) degree program. It covers a fall, spring, or summer graduate level science or education course. MSSE graduate students enrolled in the course are practicing K‑12 teachers of science working in public and/or private institutions and non‑traditional/informal instructional settings.
Position Details: Part‑time, 0.2 FTE, contract‑based appointments. Salary commensurate with experience, education, and qualifications. Non‑tenure track (Pooled) appointment in the MSSE Department, College of Letters & Science. Contract term: semester; FTE may vary per assignment.
Duties and Responsibilities- Teach MSSE online and/or campus field/lab science courses in disciplines including Ecology, Biology, Chemistry/Biochemistry, Earth Science/Geology, Land Resources and Environmental Science, Microbiology, Physics, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Plant Science, as well as education courses during fall, spring, and/or summer sessions.
- Doctoral or master’s degree in science, science education, engineering, agriculture or other relevant science education fields.
- University teaching experience, and/or experience teaching K‑12, and/or experience working as an education coordinator or curriculum developer in public or private organizations.
- Familiarity with the Next Generation Science Standards and guidelines for science teacher education and distance learning.
- Experience in the development, delivery and assessment of graduate courses.
- Possess the ability, skills, and knowledge to successfully engage and educate graduate students.
- Work independently and with minimal supervision, while establishing effective working relations with graduate students.
- Develop, deliver and assess innovative graduate‑level courses.
- Teach successfully in a distance delivery mode.
- Have a commitment to interdisciplinary education.
The position may be a Union position. Non‑Tenure Track Faculty – any position that is 0.5 FTE or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University (AFMSU). Positions less than 0.5 FTE are not represented by the Union and are not required to pay dues. If the FTE changes during employment, the representational status of this position could be impacted.
Exceptions: anyone who has successfully completed a PEI exam or any faculty working in Extension are exempt from the Union.

Program OverviewOur MSSE Program is housed in the Department of Science Education within the College of Letters & Science. The College offers students an excellent liberal arts and sciences education in nearly 50 majors, 25 minors, and over 25 graduate degrees across the humanities, natural sciences, mathematics, and social sciences. The Department provides interdisciplinary opportunities and supports student success and discovery.
