Golf Course Greenkeeper/Laborer – Light Equipment Operator
Position responsible for grounds maintenance and landscaping activities associated with the upkeep of the City’s golf courses.
Essential Functions- Operate tractors and specialized mowing equipment to maintain a neatly manicured golf course; determine shape and grass height for fairways, roughs, and greens; ensure putting greens are properly maintained; trim and edge as necessary.
- Perform turf maintenance tasks including mixing and applying fertilizer, herbicide or other agents; install, maintain and adjust irrigation systems; assist with aeration, top dressing, and reseeding of turf.
- Assist landscaping activities for all property associated with the golf course; plant and maintain trees, shrubbery, potted plants, and flowerbeds; spread mulch; pull weeds; prune trees and shrubs; rake leaves and perform similar functions.
- Perform grounds maintenance for all properties associated with the golf course, including lakes and water hazards; mow, trim, and edge grass; sweep walkways; remove litter, trash and debris; perform upkeep of facilities, including painting, routine maintenance/repairs, cleaning and disinfecting restrooms; secure buildings; repair gates and fences; ensure grounds are safe for public access.
- Perform pesticide, herbicide, and fertilizer application activities; recognize pest and weed damage; identify pests and weeds and determine appropriate remedy; read technical labels and application instructions; calculate proper application rates and dilution; schedule applications; mix and load chemicals into spray equipment/spreaders; calibrate sprayer/spreader equipment; operate self‑contained spray unit and/or tractor to apply chemicals; maintain records of spray applications; organize chemical storage area and maintain inventory;
perform routine maintenance on sprayers and spreaders; ensure safety of work crews, citizens and environment; study and take exams to maintain restricted use pesticide license. - Assist with small construction projects related to the shape and design of the golf course as well as addition of new facilities and equipment; work with Manager or other professionals to implement designs pertaining to placement, grade, and elevation of course components; conduct major course repairs as necessary.
- Operate a variety of routine and specialized vehicles and gas/electric powered tools and equipment; adhere to all local, state, and federal safety regulations; ensure compliance by coworkers and supervisors.
- Perform general maintenance tasks and minor repairs necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition; inspect equipment; calibrate equipment; check and replace fluids; grease equipment; replace parts; clean equipment; monitor equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; report faulty equipment.
- Utilize safety equipment and monitor work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
- Communicate with supervisor, employees, other departments, golfers, golf associations, the public and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- Provide assistance to other employees or departments as needed.
- High school diploma or valid equivalent.
- 1 year previous experience and/or training involving golf course maintenance, turf management, landscaping, or grounds maintenance.
- Must possess (or be able to obtain within fourteen (14) days of hire) and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license.
- Must possess and maintain a Florida Department of Agriculture restricted‑use pesticide license with turf and ornamentals specialty endorsements.
- Must possess a Florida Green Industries Best Management Training Certificate of completion within three (3) months of hire.
- Two (2) years experience working at a golf course as a spray technician.
- CPR certified.
