What You Will DoThis is a temporary position involving various duties that will either supplement the student’s major field of study and/or provide experience that is a useful addition to the student’s education & meaningful preparation for future professional employment.
Under supervision in the Planning Section, the student will receive training and assist with a variety of planning activities involving traffic engineering studies (preparing and reviewing information on highway safety and speed zones; conducting traffic counts; collecting and reviewing field data; verifying sign locations and pavement marking locations; photographing sites of proposed projects; researching and analyzing accidents and traffic signal warrants;
participating in field reviews and project scoping). Assists in scanning plans and documents in the permits database. Performs support functions in record‑keeping, maintains accurate data of work performed, organizes materials, and compiles information to assist in report preparation.
Under supervision in the Engineering Section, the student will serve as an understudy or assistant on small projects, receive training on procedures & perform specific technical tasks as assigned (operating a PC&CADD (Microstation) system & performing duties independently; calling up, working with & inserting files; copying, updating & revising existing drawings on the CADD database; creating new drawings from sketches & ports of preexisting drawings).
Performs calculations, assists with engineering studies & preliminary engineering. Uses CADD applications within the District Office to develop highway reconstruction plans: plan & profile sheets of existing & proposed roadway improvements; highway & bridge related detail drawings; tables, summaries & general notes; mapping existing & proposed routes; finalization of plan sheets in reproducible form (plotting).
Under supervision in the Construction Section, the student will receive training in proper procedures for inspection of work being done by contractors (widening and resurfacing projects, safety upgrading, signing, guardrail, intersections, drainage facilities, forms and reinforcing steel, concrete placement on structures, flexible and rigid pavement). Assists project engineer in the inspection of bituminous plants, performs tests on concrete and soils, and in any required surveying to verify field measurements.
Performs support functions in record‑keeping, maintains accurate data of work performed, organizes materials, and compiles information to assist in report preparation.
