Position Overview
As a Machinist you will be a key member of the Maintenance Shop team, reporting to the Maintenance Shop Supervisor. You will contribute to the success of Ball by performing tasks and providing services to support the plant production’s goals through maintenance, upkeep, and troubleshooting of plant tooling.
Your plant is high-volume, fast-paced 24/7-365 manufacturing environment. Crews work 12‑hour shifts, 3 days on / 3 days off, rotating day to night every 6 weeks. The Machinist will be part of an assigned production crew.
YourKey Responsibilities
- Set up and operate manual machines such as lathes, grinders, mills.
- Perform dismantling, fitting or assembly work required for tooling or production equipment.
- Receive verbal instructions, blueprints and work orders; make drawings or sketches of parts to be made or repaired; access and retrieve information from a computer.
- Interpret drawings, calculate and determine indices, tapers and other dimensions to be used for part(s).
- Receive tools and paperwork; establish and maintain electronic tracking documentation.
- Select and grind tools, adjust tools, speed and feed rates for efficient machining; machine parts to precision requirements of tolerance and finish.
- Assist in inspection of tooling and operate most inspection equipment.
- Ensure and maintain a safe and healthful working condition by abiding by established job safety practices, food safety policies, policies and procedures, and enforcing safety rules and regulations as specified in plant and corporate information.
- Perform 5S duties as required.
- Establish and maintain positive and effective work relationships within the department, division, group, and company.
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- Five (5) years minimum of machining experience with working knowledge of standard machine shop and tool and die practices; knowledge of metallurgy, heat treatment, welding, and brazing.
- Demonstrated skills in the operation of grinders, manual lathes, manual mills and other machine shop equipment, working to tolerances of up to ± 0.0001.
- Good verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to follow complicated verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to work independently within set parameters as guided by plant leadership.
- Must be able to handle sensitive related and proprietary information in a confidential manner.
- Ability to work with basic math, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Experience with reading precise measuring equipment (calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, etc.).
- Demonstrated effective relationship‑building skills that instill trust through honesty, integrity and authenticity.
- Basic computer skills such as MS Office.
- Experienced in tool and die work.
- Experience using AutoCAD.
- Hourly Starting Rate: $44.54
- Eligible to participate in the annual incentive compensation plan.
