Position: Graduate STEM Technical Editor (Contingent II)

Overview

The Graduate Research Center invites applications for a full-time STEM Graduate Technical Editor position. The editor will work with graduate students to support their development in academic writing, providing individual feedback and editorial recommendations to improve technical documents, research papers, articles, and other STEM content. The role ensures clarity, accuracy, and coherence in written materials, adheres to style guides, and facilitates clear communication of complex technical information.

The editor will collaborate with faculty on style and format to ensure consistency and quality of materials for courses and publications in print or online. This position supports the development, editing, and publication of research documents.

Responsibilities
  • Develop relationships with faculty and program directors to meet students’ writing needs and support a diverse student population, including non-native speakers, at the master’s and doctoral levels.
  • Meet with graduate administration to ensure writing styles and corrections align with BSU Graduate School guidelines.
  • Organize writing assignments to align with established guidelines for conciseness, style, and terminology, and ensure completion of student documents.
  • Support the Graduate Resource Center by maintaining a project log of documents and collaborating with staff as part of a team.
  • Content Review and Editing:
    Review and edit technical documents for clarity, grammar, punctuation, and adherence to style guides; ensure accuracy and consistency of terminology and data; verify factual information and logical flow.
  • Technical Accuracy:
    Collaborate with subject matter experts to ensure technical accuracy; cross-reference and validate data, calculations, and experimental results.
  • Formatting and Style:
    Apply formatting and style guidelines (e.g., APA, IEEE, Chicago); standardize headings, tables, figures, and references.
  • Content Development:
    Assist in developing and structuring technical content for clarity and readability; provide constructive feedback to students and faculty.
  • Project Management:
    Manage multiple editing projects concurrently and coordinate with students, faculty, and stakeholders to meet deadlines.
  • Quality Assurance:
    Conduct final reviews to ensure documents meet quality standards; implement and maintain best practices for editing and documentation.
  • Collaboration:

    Work with interdisciplinary teams, participate in meetings, and deliver graduate student writing services and resources (e.g., workshops, dissertation editing).
  • Professional Development:
    Stay current with best practices in graduate education; attend conferences and training; network with professionals in the field.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a STEM field (e.g., Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics). Terminal degree (PhD) is preferred.
  • 5 years of experience in a professional position focused on writing, editing, and formatting academic materials.
  • Experience with reference management tools (e.g., End Note, Zotero) is a plus.
  • Prior experience in academic editing or publishing is preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Terminal degree (PhD) preferred.
Conditions Of Employment
  • COVID-19 vaccinations are not required but strongly encouraged for faculty and staff; protocol subject to change.
  • May require occasional travel for meetings, conferences, or training sessions.
  • Flexible schedule to meet the needs of graduate students.
  • This position is grant-funded; continuation depends on grant funding.

Additional Job Information:

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong command of English with excellent grammar and writing skills.
  • Proven experience in technical writing or editing.
  • Familiarity with style guides (APA, IEEE, Chicago).
  • Proficient in editing tools and software (MS Word, LaTeX, Adobe Acrobat).
  • Strong understanding of academic writing conventions and research methodologies.
  • Attention to detail and ability to work with complex technical information.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Experience with content management systems and document collaboration tools.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; excellent interpersonal skills with diverse populations.
