The pay range for this role will be £26,403 - £28,142 (pro rata for part‑time colleagues) + Contractual Supplement. All new starters will begin at the bottom of the pay band. The role offers excellent scope for growth, meaningful contribution, and the chance to be part of a forward‑thinking team.

Role Purpose and Main Responsibilities

We have a vacancy for a Commercial Waste Loader / Waste Operative. No previous experience is required. You will load trade refuse / recycling vehicles, move large, potentially heavy bins from premises to the collection vehicle, and may also collect bulky items such as sofas and chairs as part of the bulky waste collection service.

The role can be physically demanding and involves being outdoors in all weathers. It offers the opportunity to learn new skills – training will be provided in the future for LGV driving.

The full‑time post is 37 hours a week, working on a rota basis. It will include early starts, late finishes, weekends, and occasional overtime/TOIL.

Main Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the successful operational delivery of the Council’s waste disposal, commercial waste and associated collection services within Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.
  • Operate services efficiently and legally, participating in a flexible 37‑hour week, including weekends, bank holidays, and occasional overtime/TOIL.
  • Participate in training to enhance knowledge and skills needed for service delivery.
  • Complete appropriate records and paperwork (e.g., time sheets, commercial waste rejection slips).
  • Take a helpful, courteous approach to all customers, suggesting solutions and marketing waste services where appropriate.
  • Work as part of a flexible, multi‑skilled team, covering other duties such as site security and taking payments for chargeable waste.
  • Share work knowledge with colleagues and new recruits.
  • Drive non‑LGV vehicles (e.g., forklift, van) when trained and authorised.
  • Wear PPE at all times and maintain it in a clean, useable standard.
  • Observe the Council’s code of Safe Working Practice as defined in the Health and Safety policy.
  • Comply with all Council decisions, policies, standing orders, and statutory requirements, including the Equality Act, Health and Safety at Work Act, and Data Protection Act.
  • Undertake other duties as required, commensurate with this post.
Site‑based activities (when tasked)
  • Carry out duties associated with the site: sort waste and recyclable material, load, sweep, cleanse, and assist and direct site users.
  • Ensure the site is clean, maintained, and safe for all users.
  • Perform stop-and-verification of vehicles when required, checking driver identification and proof of address to ensure only approved users access the site.
  • Report to team leaders details of any users suspected of abusing the site or staff.
  • Ensure waste entering the site is separated out to maximise landfill diversion.
  • Posts base at Recycling Centres at Nuffield or Millhams; some cover may be required between sites.
Loading on RCV (when tasked)
  • Empty commercial waste containers.
  • Under the general direction of the driver, load vehicles safely and efficiently.
  • Assist the driver in vehicle manoeuvring and act as a banksman when required.
  • Expand and maintain knowledge of all commercial collection routes and other operational services.
  • Train as an LGV driver to cover driver absence (will be remunerated at appropriate rate).
The Ideal Candidate

Good communication skills are essential, as you will speak to commercial customers and the public. You should be flexible, hardworking, a team player, able to carry out instructions efficiently, and proud to get the job done well.
