POSITION SUMMARY

The Residential Life program at Olivet is a vital discipling ministry and student support service for the university. We strive to create environments where students can experience God, develop purpose, and build community. Resident Directors (RDs) are essential roles to helping ONU meet our purpose of helping students know they are seen, valued, known, and cared for. The Resident Director oversees every aspect of residential living and is a support to the students assigned to their residential living area.

REPORTING STRUCTURE

The Resident Director reports to the Area Coordinator for Residence Halls.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

* Interact with all students within the assigned residential living area to foster healthy relationships and to provide support while students are enrolled at Olivet.

* Mentor and supervise student Resident Assistants selected for your residential living area.

* Foster a community within your assigned residential living area by implementing programming and social events, as well as promoting and attending campus activities.

* Assist students with personal, social, spiritual, and academic needs, making necessary referrals to campus support.

* Perform functions of the lead administrator of the residential living area, communicating in a timely and professional way.

* Serve as a mediator in student conflict, as well as serve as a conduct hearing officer within the university student conduct process.

* Inform and interpret all ONU regulations to students, enforce all University policies, up to and including administering appropriate disciplinary actions.

* Oversee building facilities and work order management, communicating and collaborating with the Physical Plant department.

* Work alongside the Area Coordinator and other RDs in the area to create communities of belonging in the residential living area, implement university initiatives, and provide strategic programming.

* Serve as a part of the Student Development and Residential Life team by attending required meetings and events during the academic year.

* Fulfill any additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Area Coordinator and/or Director of Residential Life.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Resident Director will supervise students who have been hired as Resident Assistants to live and serve in the assigned residential living area.

Skills and Abilities

Required

* A lifestyle in agreement with the ONU Statement of Mission, Faith, and Lifestyle Covenant. This lifestyle agreement is in effect for the duration of employment, including summers and all university breaks, on and off campus.

* Desire and ability to work with college aged students.

* Highest level of confidentiality and discretion.

* Proven ability to function under pressure, remaining calm and helpful using interpersonal skills to deal with conflicts and the unexpected.

* Proven ability to prioritize projects and tasks with flexibility.

* Professional communication skills, including the ability to speak and write effectively to be able to work with students, parents, administration, employees, and outside entities in order to convey a professional and helpful image.

* Attention to detail and organizational skills.

* A proven understanding of teamwork, collaboration, and a teachable disposition.

* Preferred:

* A graduate from ONU and a familiarity with ONU residential campus life.

* A familiarity and/or personal experience with a Christian Student Development perspective.

* Past service as a Resident Assistant on the campus of ONU.

Additional Information

EDUCATION

Possess a minimum of an earned bachelor's degree; a traditional undergraduate degree from Olivet Nazarene University is preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Resident Directors reside in the assigned residential living area for which he/she has direct responsibility. RDs hold a 10-month position, typically end of July through middle of May, and are exempt from overtime. Resident Directors are expected to be on-call for their residential areas from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, while the academic year is in session and students are living in residential housing.

Evening, night, and weekend coverage is provided through an on-call rotation among Resident Director staff, and this position will participate in that rotation. Resident Directors are off-duty when student residence halls or apartments are closed during University breaks, including Thanksgiving, Christmas, spring, and summer breaks, unless otherwise scheduled.
