OverviewUnder the direction of the Communications Center Supervisor and/or Police Chief, the Communications Center Lead Supervisor supervises and directs employees engaged in public safety dispatching and emergency call‑taking operations, monitors communication center equipment and systems, assists in the development of policies and procedures and monitors overall efficiency of the communications center.
Essential Job Functions- Promotes and follows the Department's mission statement, values and expectations.
- Supervises, assigns, trains and evaluates employees in their duty of public safety dispatching and emergency call‑taking, observing efficiency of work performance.
- Ensures conformance to Department methods, policies and procedures.
- Provides supervision and leadership within the Communication Center, recognizing employee performance, fostering a learning environment, mentoring, coaching and counseling subordinates.
- Schedules Communications Officers to ensure 24/7 coverage, including coverage for vacation, sick leave, emergency, training and FMLA.
- Participates in the selection of Communication Center personnel, including applicant testing and interviews.
- Completes monthly Employee Action Logs for each dispatcher.
- Develops and provides training, including remedial training, and manages the Communication Training Officer program, ensuring effectiveness and implementing improvements.
- Assists in developing policies and procedures for the Communication Center, recommending changes and completing updates to documentation.
- Conducts complaint investigations, documents findings and recommends corrective or disciplinary actions.
- Inspects, monitors and reports on preventive maintenance and repairs of center equipment, systems, premises and supplies.
- Performs the duties of a Communications Officer as needed.
- Performs monthly Quality Assurance reviews and provides feedback and training as necessary.
- Attends required meetings.
- Assists the Communications Officers Supervisor with operations of the Communications Center, including planning, prioritizing, hiring, scheduling, training, supervising and evaluating performance.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Type 50 words per minute on a standard keyboard; essential knowledge of spelling, vocabulary, office procedures, analytical abilities, and office equipment.
- Comprehensive knowledge of standard operating procedures for law enforcement and fire service communication centers, including radio, telephone and computer equipment operation.
- Comprehensive knowledge of state computer and other programs used in the communications center.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain positive relationships within the dispatch center.
- Maintain yearly in‑service certification hours.
- Use computer, telephone, two‑way radio, copy machine and fax machine proficiently.
- Provide 9‑1‑1 recordings when requested.
- Work shifts including nights, weekends and holidays; subject to overtime and required to take meal breaks on site when needed.
- Operate computer‑aided dispatch system, PSAP equipment, TTY/TDD equipment, radio system console, audio recording equipment, phone system, fax machine, alarm boards and similar systems.
- Speak clearly and be understood by field units via telephone and radio.
- Hear and understand the public and field units via telephone and radio.
- Provide leadership and manage resources and operations of a public safety communications center.
- Complete a supervisor's course within the first 12 months of employment or as soon as a class is available.
- Good communication and organizational skills.
- Operate a computer using existing programs and software.
- Good knowledge of proper grammar, punctuation and spelling.
