Job Summary

The Jail Maintenance Worker performs skilled technical maintenance and major repair work on the plumbing, electrical systems, and security systems within the corrections facility. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor.

Responsibilities
  • Perform repairs and maintenance on the Corrections Facility and equipment, including electrical and mechanical systems, minor remodeling projects and carpentry work.
  • Assist with project planning, estimates, needed materials, time and labor, and ensure appropriate materials, tools, and equipment are available and used properly.
  • Assign and monitor work to assure efficient workflow.
  • Assist in keeping premises in an orderly condition.
  • Direct and train less experienced personnel in the construction and maintenance trades.
  • Operate and perform maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Read, interpret, and work from blueprints, diagrams, and engineering sketches.
  • Perform related work as required.
  • Must be willing to participate in on‑call rotation.
Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Four years of maintenance experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of the use of materials, equipment, and procedures necessary for building and grounds maintenance.
  • Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to building and grounds maintenance.
  • Skilled in the operation of tools and equipment required by the position.
  • Preferred experience in the commercial maintenance field, repair of food service and laundry equipment.
  • Must possess solid skills in plumbing, electrical and carpentry.
  • Ability to work effectively with employees, inmate trusties, other agencies, and the public.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a thorough background investigation, polygraph, drug screen and medical exam.
Functional Requirements
  • Vision – Dual vision is not required. Single eye correctable vision is acceptable. Minimum peripheral vision for single vision is 900 on the ear side and 700 on the nose side.
  • Hearing – Dual hearing is required. Must not have an average hearing loss in the better ear greater than 40 decibels at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz.
  • Sense of Smell – Intact. Occasionally uses olfactory sense to evaluate presence of toxic vapors.
  • Speech – Must be able to fluently speak and understand English. Clear diction and audible volume are required.
  • Body Movement – Must have mobility of both arms and legs to move around the work area unassisted; must have upward mobility of both arms to reach over head, reach below knees, and to bend over or squat down to lift or remove boxes.
  • Hands and Arms – Must have dexterity in hands to pick up small items and use various hand and power tools.
  • Legs and Lower Body – Must be able to climb stairs, ladders, and scaffolds; stand for long periods; bend, squat, kneel, or crawl in confined areas.
  • Lifting – Must be able to lift and carry cartons of supplies or machinery parts up to 80 pounds; operate hand chain hoists with pull weights up to 70 pounds; remove security panels weighing 20–80 pounds.
