Job Description Summary

OSMP’s Vegetation Stewardship team conducts long-term, watershed level invasive species management and restoration practices on natural lands in order to maintain and restore ecosystem function. This position requires hiking up to 10 hours a day, carrying equipment such as hand tools, power tools and herbicide, and working outside in inclement weather and mountainous terrain. The job demands sustained focus, attention to detail, and a team-oriented mindset.

Crew Members will have the opportunity to gain technical certifications and learn new skills and best practices related to vegetation management and ecological restoration.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Implement management prescriptions including weed whipping, hand-pulling/digging, herbicide treatments with hand-held and backpack sprayers, and tree and shrub cut-stump treatments to help protect and restore native ecosystems.
  • Assist in the coordination of volunteers and other work groups assigned to vegetation management projects.
  • Work collaboratively on projects with other agency staff and/or volunteers in forest, grassland, and riparian/aquatic ecosystems.
  • May conduct biocontrol insect releases and assist with seasonal livestock management prescriptions.
  • May perform native species seed collections and shrub planting.
  • Assist in maintaining detailed records of daily management prescriptions for database input.
  • Assist with surveys and data collection for assorted invasive and native species using GPS technology and aerial photography.
  • Cultivate a positive, collaborative team-oriented work environment.
  • Operate four-wheel drive vehicles as well as related hand tools like weed whips, chainsaws, and backpack sprayers on rough terrain.
  • Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Uses all proper safety equipment. Reports all accidents and damage to city property.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to perform a wide range of physical and manual tasks in an outdoor environment under a variety of weather conditions. Physical ability to stand, walk, kneel and lift heavy objects on a regular basis.
  • Ability to learn invasive/native plant identification. Interest in plants, natural resources, or ecology.
  • Ability and willingness to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow established procedures and direction for the benefit and safety of the team.
  • Knowledge and understanding the interests and concerns of others and able and willing to share and receive information.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record.
  • Have and maintain an acceptable background information including criminal history is required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in ecological restoration techniques and/or invasive species management in forest, grassland, or aquatic systems. College level coursework in Ecology, Biology, Environmental Studies, or related field can be substituted for experience
  • Knowledge of common Front Range native and invasive species and/or the ability to a dichotomous key to identify species.
  • Ability to identify or suggest what needs to be done without having to be asked; self-motivation.
  • Ability to operate and use equipment such as weed whips, mowers, backpack/handheld herbicide sprayers, pumps, and/or other related landscape maintenance equipment.
  • Training or experience with GPS, GIS applications, map reading/aerial photo interpretation.
