Co-founded in 1998 by two PhD students, Jerry Keir and Sanjay Pyare, at the University of Nevada, the Institute began as a field studies program to mobilize University faculty, students, and volunteers in applied science and direct service to support national parks, forests, open spaces and public lands. Since then, for over two decades, GBI has supported over 7,000 conservationist serving hundreds of projects to realize positive environmental change across the western US.
GBI has raised over 165MM for research, education, and service, making impactful contributions to serving the public and our public lands. GBI is based out of Reno, Nevada, with Satellite offices in Las Vegas, Nevada and South Lake Tahoe, CA. GBI is the recipient of the 2015 USFS’s “Regional Forester Award,” the Nevada Governor’s Points of Light Award in 2005 and was named “Outstanding Non-government Organization” by Environmental Leadership in 2001.
DESCRIPTION
The Ameri Corps Compliance Specialist will join Great Basin Institute (GBI) prepared to be part of the team at a dynamic, environmental non-profit organization. As the Ameri Corps subject matter expert, this position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of program compliance as it relates to Ameri Corps policies and procedures. The Compliance Specialist will work closely with GBI’s Executive and Senior Leadership Teams (particularly Program Directors) to develop and maintain compliance tracking and auditing systems in accordance with Ameri Corps regulations and guidelines.
Everyday engagement with Program Coordinators will ensure standards are maintained through training, coaching, and mentoring, specific to GBI’s two Ameri Corps grants.
Essential Job Functions include the following:
- Manage and lead organizational compliance with Ameri Corps policies and procedures;
- Subject Matter Expert resource to GBI staff and collaborators on all things Ameri Corps;
- Lead Ameri Corps compliance training for GBI staff and host site supervisors, including developing or improving training materials and delivering sessions as needed;
- Assist with program and organizational reporting as it relates to Ameri Corps grants;
- Maintain GBI Ameri Corps Compliance Manual with the latest process improvements and any needed updates on an annual basis;
- Monitor Ameri Corps compliance requirements and update new member paperwork, resource documents, and organizational procedures as necessary;
- Distribute, collect, file, and track completion for all Ameri Corps Member paperwork in collaboration with GBI member coordinators;
- Manage completion of Ameri Corps Criminal History Check requirements and ensure compliance with start dates;
- Track Ameri Corps Members through their service term in order to enroll, initiate evaluations, suspend terms as necessary, and exit members in compliance with standards and procedures;
- Facilitate routine Ameri Corps Compliance meetings with GBI program leadership, GBI Ameri Corps leadership, and individual Ameri Corps supervisors to maintain visibility on member statuses and provide staff with relevant updates.
- Facilitate and manage Ameri Corps compliance audits, including conducting member file and compliance audits (pre-emptive internally in preparation for external formal audits);
- Uphold and foster GBI’s leadership values of “sustainable teams, adaptive management, collaborative ecosystems, and clarity of purpose;”
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment; and
- Maintain professional and courteous presence and demeanor.
