Stewards Individual Placements provides individuals with Ameri Corps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural and cultural resources. The Youth Empowerment Steward (YES) initiative aims to increase access to the outdoors for all Americans.

Role of YES Member with National Mall & Memorial Parks
The National Mall is the heart of our nation’s capital and has endured since the city’s original design by Pierre L’Enfant over 200 years ago. It is an inclusive and open environment where we celebrate our national identity and important events. The National Mall, the nation’s foremost civic space, is the primary location for political demonstrations, First Amendment activities, rallies, parades, and numerous festivals.

Visitors of every race, nationality, and faith come to the National Mall to celebrate, commemorate, demonstrate, or just have fun.

The Youth Empowerment Steward (YES) Ameri Corps Member at National Mall & Memorial Parks will support the Volunteer in Parks program at National Mall and Memorial Parks. The mission of the volunteer program is to supplement park resources to enrich the visitor experience and the park itself through collaboration amongst all of the park’s divisions. The program provides performance training, fosters commitment to National Park Service goals, and seeks to build a community around meaningful experiences and diverse backgrounds, where all involved learn and grow together.

The YES Member will serve as a site coordinator within the National Mall & Memorial Parks volunteer program, leading some interpretation programming and other visitor services efforts. This role is intended to deepen the connection between National Mall & Memorial Park and the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Legacy Committee. The primary task is to recruit and train volunteers to interact with visitors and lead tours through the four main rooms at the FDR memorial.

To achieve the goals of this YES position, the member will:

• Build a diverse and capable team of volunteers who can effectively engage with visitors and promote ADA-related themes at the FDR Memorial
  • Develop and implement targeted volunteer recruitment strategies, with efforts also focusing on those from the disability community
  • Create a comprehensive training program, including the history of the FDR Memorial, ADA themes, visitor engagement techniques, and accessibility awareness
  • Organize regular trainings and workshops to enhance volunteer skills, knowledge, and retention
• Assess and enhance the accessibility of the FDR Memorial and surrounding National Mall sites to ensure access for all visitors
