Boulder Medical Center (BMC) is a local, independent, and physician-owned medical group with over 20 primary and specialty care departments, 90 providers, and 325+ clinical and support professionals. Since our founding by 10 physicians in 1949, we have grown and evolved to meet the needs of Boulder County and beyond. We currently have clinics located in Boulder (2 locations), Louisville, Longmont, and Erie.
SummaryBoulder Medical Center (BMC) is seeking a Coding Education Specialist to join our Business Office Team! This full-time, 40-hour/week, benefits-eligible role is based onsite at our Broadway clinic, 2750 Broadway St., Boulder, CO 80304.
As our Coding Educator, your primary focus is to continuously educate and support providers, ensuring accurate coding and optimized reimbursements. You’ll provide 1:1 coaching, develop and deliver coding education and training programs, and translate complex ICD-10 guidelines into clear, actionable instruction. You will also analyze coding trends and audit data, identify risks and opportunities, and share insights with leadership and care teams.
Responsibilities- Serve as a subject matter expert in clinical documentation, coding best practices, and risk adjustment, providing guidance to coders, providers, and operational leadership.
- Analyze and audit medical record documentation to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCC, and regulatory requirements.
- Identify trends, patterns, risks, and educational opportunities through audit findings, coding analysis, and data review; prepare and present audit results and recommendations to leadership.
- Develop, deliver, and maintain comprehensive education and training programs for new and existing coders, providers, and clinical staff, including onboarding, ongoing education, and specialty-specific training.
- Provide individualized and group education sessions based on audit results, coding trends, regulatory changes, and identified knowledge gaps.
- Research and provide guidance on coding-related questions, including new or revised ICD-10, CPT, and HCC codes, and communicate updates to affected stakeholders.
- Monitor the quality and consistency of coding practices, promote standardization across teams, and recommend process improvements to enhance accuracy, compliance, and performance.
- Participate in short-term and long-term strategic planning related to compliant coding, documentation integrity, and regulatory billing practices.
- Maintain current knowledge of CMS, HHS, state, and federal regulations, official coding guidelines, and payer requirements; ensure timely and accurate implementation of changes.
- Utilize analytical and problem-solving skills to assess data, metrics, and trends related to coding quality, audit outcomes, and educational effectiveness.
- Maintain detailed records of audits, education sessions, corrective actions, and follow-up activities to ensure transparency and compliance.
- Must be knowledgeable about insurance, coding and HIPAA regulations.
- Must be able to analyze detailed applicable transcriptions/charts/charge sheets.
- Must use judgment and initiative in researching questionable charges and coding.
- Must have excellent customer service and communication skills.
- High school graduate.
- AAPC or equivalent coding certificate.
- 3+ years coding experience and/or healthcare billing background
The starting hourly pay range for this position is commensurate with experience:
- $33.50 - $41.87/hourly ($69k - $87k/annually)
Boulder, CO - onsite, not remote.
