Job Description & How to Apply Below
Scout's geospatial intern will contribute to the geospatial team's goal of fostering successful renewable project development by leveraging data throughout the project lifecycle. You will utilize your analytical skills to enhance the processes of the geospatial team and directly support the development of utility scale wind, solar, and battery storage projects. As an intern, you will work on a summer project in addition to contributing to the core functions of the geospatial team.
This project will be agreed upon at the beginning of the internship according to business needs and your interests and expertise as the intern. Examples of potential projects can be found below. The core functions of the geospatial group include both web and static map creation, project site assessment, systems integration, and data management.
Projects:
* Internalizing datasets - We frequently use publicly available datasets, such as the National Wetlands Inventory and FEMA Flood Hazard layer, to complete analyses, but these datasets can come in a variety of different formats. Some are accessed via online GIS services that have export limits or are unreliable. Storing these datasets in our internal infrastructure would allow us to avoid restrictive public GIS services and perform larger scale analyses with ease.
You will devise and execute strategies to bring this data in-house.
* You will work with the geospatial team to determine the requirements that the team has for the specified dataset(s)
* Based on how the data is currently made available to the public, you will devise a process to acquire this data, store it, and keep it updated
* Skills you'll use and develop: data conversion and management, FME, ArcGIS Model Builder, Python
* Microwave radio beam studies - One of the many aspects of determining the best placement of wind turbines is the avoidance of existing microwave radio beams. Currently, Scout leverages consultants to map these beam paths for internal analyses. If we bring this capability in-house, it has the potential to identify potential conflicts earlier in the project development process. You will develop a solution to enable the team to perform these studies in-house.
* You will work with the geospatial team and project development team to gather information about the deliverables of these studies
* This project can be approached as a tool or dataset problem. You could develop a data pipeline and dataset for use with our current tools or develop a process by which geospatial team members perform these studies themselves
* Skills you'll use and develop:
Python, SQL, APIs, database management, research
* Working towards or recently completed a bachelor's degree in Geographic Information Science, Computer Science, Information Science or similar field
* Detail oriented and a desire to deliver high quality results
* Interest in the renewable energy industry
* Effective verbal and written communication skills
Organizational Fit:
* Ability to multi-task and arbitrate between conflicting priorities with clear target setting and follow-through capability in a fast-paced work environment.
* Be self-motivated and able to work independently.
* Be able to come up with creative solutions to problems.
* Ability to collaborate across a variety of teams at the company.
* Authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Timeline and Location
This position will begin in May/June 2026. The internship will be a full-time (40 hr/week) commitment for the duration of the 12-week internship program. Our ideal candidate will be able to work out of our Boulder office during the duration of the internship program per the program requirements.
