Torment is an independent snowboard media platform amplifying riders, photographers, and writers who care about the culture as much as we do. Our goal is to create, publish and elevate the best of snowboarding. As an independent outlet, we try to be selective about what we publish and how stories are told. We appreciate thoughtful design and hold snowboarding and its representation to a high standard.
Your opportunity at Torment
Torment Magazine is hiring a designer to help build our yearly print publication:
Issue NINE
, a 200-page hardcover book. This is a part‑time, project‑based role spanning April through September 2026, working as part of our editorial team to craft the look, feel, and visual language of the issue.
You’ll help define how stories are told visually, how photography is sequenced, and how the magazine comes together as a cohesive work. We’re looking for someone who understands snowboarding culture and cares about layout, pacing, and typography. If you’ve seen the mag you know what we are talking about.
What you’ll do
- Collaborate with editors to shape the overall look and feel of Issue NINE
- Select and sequence photography in partnership with photo editors
- Design article layouts, titles, and supporting graphics
- Brainstorm visual approaches to stories and features
- Build and refine layouts in InDesign from concept through final files
- Develop graphics in Illustrator
- Help ensure consistent aesthetic and intention across the full issue
What we’re looking for
- Ability to quickly build from Torment’s existing visual language while continuing to evolve how the book and brand look and feel. We’re looking for someone highly collaborative yet confident in their vision.
- Strong proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Illustrator
- A strong understanding of snowboarding culture
- A good eye for typography, pacing, and hierarchy
- Ability to take direction, contribute ideas, and work collaboratively
- Comfortable working independently and meeting deadlines in a small team environment
Extra points for experience working with photography‑led publications or independent media.
