Position: PT LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE WORKER

This position works in a variety of public works divisions for the City performing routine landscape maintenance.

This description is intended to indicate the essential functions and levels of work difficulty of the position and is not intended to describe in detail all of the position's specific duties and responsibilities nor exclude other duties of similar level or difficulty. Additionally, it is not intended to limit management's rights to assign, direct, and control the work of employees beyond the essential functions under their supervision.

Assists in clearing and removing weeds and litter from roadside drainage ditches using hand tools such as pitch forks and mechanical tools such as weed eaters and in reshaping the drainage ditch to permit proper storm water flow using hand tools such as shovels and operating dump trucks and water trucks.

Assists in maintenance of City parks and/or landscaped areas using lawnmowers, power edgers and other tools.

Assists in the installation and repair of the irrigation systems.

High school diploma or equivalent. One (1) year of experience in landscape maintenance work.

Note:

An equivalent combination of related training and experience may be considered.

Possess and maintain a valid Nevada or “border state” driver’s license, as defined by NRS 483.

Must possess or have the ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of appointment, forklift certification.

All required licenses and certifications are conditions of employment. Required licenses and certifications must remain valid and in effect throughout incumbency.

Must pass a nationwide fingerprint-based record check, and a wants/warrants check.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of functions of common hand tools such as shovels, pickax and the like; proper method of operating motorized equipment; safe working practices.

Skill in using personal computers, facsimile machines, ten-key adding machines, cash registers, and telephones.

Ability to properly use and care for hand and power tools, equipment and materials related to the maintenance of the City divisions; obtain skills in learning the methods used in performing tasks accomplished by the maintenance worker classifications; perform manual work such as digging, raking, sweeping and hoeing; lift and/or move heavy objects; keep simple records; communicate effectively with others verbally and in writing;

establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and follow written and verbal instructions.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT General

Physical Requirements

Heavy work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds unassisted.

Mental Activities

Upholding ethical standards and practices. Making decisions that align with City’s values and ethics. Maintaining focus on tasks over extended periods. Avoiding distractions in a busy environment. Understanding written documents and instructions. Interpreting and applying information from various sources. Using specific software or equipment. Physical Activities

The worker performs physically demanding manual work in lifting, pushing or pulling heavy objects and operating janitorial and maintenance equipment and tools.

Visual Acuity

The worker is required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment; close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; expansive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices and/or assembly of fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes;

visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.

Working Conditions

The worker is subject to adverse weather conditions, toxic agents, hazards associated with the operation of various motor driven and handheld power tools and equipment.
