Group Exercise Instructor – Parkway YMCA
Reporting to the Health and Wellness Director and working with other Wellness staff, the Group Exercise Instructor leads group exercise classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes all skill and fitness levels. The instructor builds community within class, modifies workouts to meet varied health, ability, and cultural needs, and promotes healthy habits through engaging leadership.
SchedulePart‑time hours – evenings and weekends as needed.
Compensation$40.00–$45.00 per hour.
Key Responsibilities- Lead energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes to provide high‑quality experiences for members and guests.
- Answer questions from participants and support them in achieving health and well‑being goals.
- Maintain a working knowledge of wellness trends through YUSA courses and external training.
- Build authentic relationships with participants, encouraging connection within the YMCA community.
- Observe and adjust approach to accommodate all participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture.
- Celebrate participants’ achievements related to program or personal goals.
- Keep accurate class attendance records using the online Group Exercise Management software (Motion Vibe).
- Follow YMCA policies and procedures and respond to emergency situations.
- Resolve member issues professionally in alignment with YMCA values.
- At least one year of experience in a group exercise setting.
- Current NCCA‑accredited certification in group exercise (examples: ACE, AFFA, NASM, NSCA, ISSA).
- If teaching a specific format (Yoga, Spin, Les Mills, etc.), current certification required.
- Experience in health and wellness programming and group instruction.
- Understanding of internal and external marketing and special events.
- CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
- Ability to interpret and implement the mission and goals of the YMCA in classes/programs.
- Commitment to creating an inclusive environment for participants of all backgrounds and abilities.
- Effective communication with adults, youth, teens, seniors, and special populations.
- Team player who works as an integral part of the staff team.
- Preferred: degree in Exercise Science or Physical Education.
- Develop leadership skills in a caring, challenging, and diverse environment.
