Job DescriptionReporting to the Health and Wellness Director and working with other wellness staff, the Group Exercise Instructor instructs group exercise classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes all skill and fitness levels. Effectively build community within class and modify class as needed to meet varied health, ability and cultural needs. The YMCA seeks an instructor who can lead sound healthy habits through engaging leadership in our classes.
Qualifications include current certification in Group Exercise from a nationally certifying body; NCCA accredited certifications preferred.
Key Responsibilities- Lead energizing, safe, and educational group classes to provide high‑quality experiences for members and guests.
- Ask and answer questions from participants and support them in achieving health and well‑being goals.
- Maintain working knowledge of wellness trends through YUSA courses and external training.
- Build authentic relationships with members and help them connect with each other and the YMCA.
- Observe and adjust approach to support all participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, healthcenter, and culture.
- Celebrate achievements of program participants related to program or personal goals.
- Keep accurate class attendance records through our online Group Exercise Management software (Motion Vibe).

- Resolve member issues professionally and in alignment with YMCA values.
- At least one year of experience in a group exercise setting.
- NCCA accredited certification (e.g., ACE, AFFA, NASM, NSCA, ISSA).
- For specific formats, current certification required (Yoga, Spin, Les Mills Body Pump, Body Combat).
- Experience in health and wellness programming and group instruction.
- Understanding of marketing/special events.
- Understand and enhance relationships among staff, volunteers, and public.
- Interpret, carry out, and implement YMCA mission and goals in classes.
- Commit to creating an inclusive environment for participants of all backgrounds.
- Work as an integral member of a staff team.
- Communicate effectively with adults, youth, teens, seniors, and special populations.
- Degree in exercise science or physical education preferred but not required.
- CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.
- Minimum of one year of fitness experience.
- Develop leadership skills in a caring, challenging & diverse environment.
