As a senior engineering manager in our Search & Listings (S&L) organization, you will lead a team at the heart of a real‑estate technology platform that simplifies the process of finding, buying, and selling homes.

The Role

S&L brings in property and listing data from hundreds of sources nationwide, cleans the data, makes it accessible across our customer platform, and builds rich experiences for agents and consumers to search, track, share, and explore properties and listings. Our tools are foundational to the Compass platform, enabling agents to work more efficiently and grow their businesses.

In this role you will oversee critical products and services that are central to our agent workflows, including both agent‑ and consumer‑facing real‑estate search experiences. You will manage a highly talented and energetic team of engineers, driving delivery of roadmap features while maintaining high operational standards, resilience, and cost‑efficiency. You will collaborate cross‑functionally with product managers, designers, staff engineers and senior leadership to define, execute, and report on the software development strategy that aligns with the company’s goals.

Responsibilities
  • Lead, mentor, and grow an organization of talented managers and engineers.
  • Participate in setting the organization’s goals, develop its roadmap, and represent core Search teams interacting with senior leaders across the company.
  • Provide guidance and support in career development, skill enhancement, and performance management for team members.
  • Oversee the entire software development lifecycle, from requirements gathering to deployment, ensuring timely delivery of high‑quality software solutions.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to align technical solutions with business goals.
  • Drive innovation, maintain code quality, and ensure adherence to software development best practices.
  • Work closely with senior leadership and other stakeholders to define, execute, and report on the software development strategy in alignment with the company’s overall goals.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance team efficiency and project delivery.
  • Collaborate with other engineering leaders to champion and evangelize a technical vision for engineering at Compass.
  • Connector across engineering teams to drive sound technical and architecture decisions that help effectively scale our products, considering short‑ and long‑term risks.
Requirements
  • 10+ years of experience in software development and at least 7+ years of management experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • A highly technical, hands‑on technical leader and an effective people manager with experience directly leading teams and other managers.
  • Experience designing, developing, and maintaining web applications, distributed backend systems, or data platforms.
  • Experience with technologies such as Java, AWS, Elastic Search, Kafka, Python, Typescript, React.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate and inspire a team.
  • Proven track record of using agile principles with multiple teams and products to meet project goals and deliver high‑quality products.
  • Excellent communication skills, utilized to collaborate both within engineering and across all functions of the company to drive engineering initiatives.
  • Excellent mentoring and review skills to help engineers make technical and career progress.
  • Exceptional focus on customers by building products that are stable and reliable.
Compensation

The base pay range for this position is $167,000‑$252,200 annually; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience.
