Brief

Job Description (essential functions of the job)

Under the direction of the Fleet Manager and Superintendent, the Heavy Motor Equipment Repair person is responsible for examining and locating mechanical defects in a variety of heavy and special motor equipment, such as power shovels, cranes, wrecker trucks, heavy tractor‑trailers, and other earth‑moving equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Disassemble, repair, or replace work parts; fit new parts and adjust engines, oil, water, fuel pumps, carburetors, fuel injectors, etc.
  • Operate welding equipment to fabricate, rebuild, and strengthen parts and pieces of equipment.
  • Maintain records of time and materials used on each job.
  • Adjust and repair air brakes, carburetors, hydraulic pumps, cylinder heads, valves, and similar components of all types of heavy motor equipment.
  • Overhaul engines, transmissions, and ignition systems and replace damaged parts.
  • Answer road calls and make repairs either at the road site or in the garage.
  • Make minor adjustments and repairs to all types of equipment.
  • Must have the ability to use a wrecker truck for towing if necessary.
  • Perform related work as required.

The employee is required to work any emergency as directed by the Commissioner of Parks or his/her designee.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of gasoline engine‑driven equipment or related work.
  • CDL Class B license with an air brake endorsement; hoisting licenses must be obtained within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Must have your own basic tools to repair or replace parts of gasoline and diesel‑driven equipment within the first month of hire.
  • Specialty tools will be available to employees by the Department. (Employees are eligible for a tool allowance.)
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • A valid MA Driver’s License is required.

Must be able to work any assigned shift.

Union/Salary Plan/Grade: AFSCME/RA1‑13. Hours per week: 40.
