Employees must be Boston residents on their date of hire and for the duration of their employment subject to BWSC policies and collective bargaining agreements.

Position Purpose

Installs and maintains all electric systems for BWSC facilities, meters and reading devices and those systems owned or controlled by the Commission; ensures organizational efficiency in the application of prescribed policies, procedures, and methods.

Essential Functions
  • Assembles, installs, tests, and maintains electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, and fixtures, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Diagnoses malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.
  • Inspects electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes.
  • Connects wires to circuit breakers, transformers, or other components.
  • Makes periodic inspections of all plant equipment.
  • Repairs and adjusts defective equipment.
  • Inspects, maintains and repairs wiring, vacuum pumps, switches, chlorinating equipment, contacts, motors and other electrical equipment at all pumping stations.
  • Operates gates, valves, air conditioning units and high tension disconnections.
  • Installs industrial, residential and commercial equipment such as heating, lighting and power in Commission facilities.
  • Collaborates with other Commission staff in the installation and maintenance of pumps and equipment.
  • Required to work any as directed by the Commission or its designee.
  • Completes and submits daily activity log, work orders and other related paperwork.
  • Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent. Five (5) years of experience as a licensed Electrician. Experience in water, wastewater or construction industry, preferably in the public sector working with local government. Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must have Massachusetts Journeyman Electrician’s License or Master Electrician’s License. Thorough knowledge of City of Boston electric codes is required. Must possess a valid Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill

Knowledge:
Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions particular to the electric trade; advanced knowledge of all electric principals and procedures; familiarity with advanced principles of field operations; advanced knowledge of electric equipment; advanced working knowledge of departmental policies and procedures; advanced knowledge of complex water/sewage plant configurations; knowledge of the operation of hydraulic, pneumatic and electronic equipment; thorough knowledge of all safety procedures and the proper use of all required safety equipment.

Ability:
Evaluate and perform repairs; work in a time-efficient manner; read blueprints and diagrams; draw sketches; effectively deal with the public and other staff; must be able to prepare written and oral reports; read and interpret blueprints and plans; communicate effectively and tactfully with staff and public, compose correspondence; prioritize and complete multiple tasks at one time with frequent interruptions. Operate a computer with intermediate MS Office skills;

create spreadsheets and maintain records; use telephone system.

Skill:
Excellent electric repair skills; strong organizational skills; skills in all of the above listed tools and equipment.

Physical Requirements

This position is regularly required to sit, talk, hear, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms as in picking up equipment and other common repair tools. Physical agility required to access all areas of inspection sites and sewer locations. Employee may occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
