The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, training and internal pay comparison. The above hiring range represents the University s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Overview of the DepartmentBoston University is a dynamic and vibrant urban research university with three campuses:
Charles River Campus, Boston University Medical Campus (South End), and Fenway Campus. The Public Safety Department supports inclusion, equity and diversity, and strives to reflect the diversity of the City of Boston. The Public Safety Officer reports to the Public Safety Operations Manager and supports the department s mission to provide safe, professional, courteous and dependable service across the University and its campuses.
The Public Safety Officer provides security, parking control, and assigned duties as necessary. They ensure professional, courteous, fair, consistent, and safe service delivery throughout the University and assigned areas of responsibility.
Duties include:
- Perform access control in accordance with University and Department Policies.
- Provide information and service to faculty, staff, students and visitors in a friendly, courteous, and helpful manner.
- Respond immediately and appropriately to emergency, contingency, or disaster situations and relay actions to the Public Safety Dispatcher or other appropriate entity.
- Document all incidents and inform Public Safety Dispatcher and/or Management of actions taken; write incident reports in a professional, clear, and legible manner.
- Maintain accountability and chain of custody of all property, evidence, and equipment; provide walking and vehicle escorts as needed.
- Patrol University property and grounds; identify and address deficiencies and/or violations of policy.
- Monitor security cameras and alarm systems; notify relevant personnel and Management of serious incidents.
- A friendly, courteous, helpful and professional attitude.
- Understanding of community policing within the context of a diverse, urban university community.
- Ability to understand how identity aspects (culture, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability) can impact engagement with security forces; sensitivity to cultural contexts related to bias and discrimination.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Valid Massachusetts driver s license.
- Good judgment and independent decision making.
- Ability to pass a comprehensive criminal and financial background check, psychological examination and pre-employment medical exam.
- Preferred experience in security or law enforcement.
- Some knowledge of current computer operating systems.
- Strong problem solving and decision making skills under stressful conditions or within limited time constraints.
- Ability to maintain required clearances, training, and performance standards as prescribed by the University and Department.
