The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks applicants for an Archaeological Field and Curation Intern (Unpaid Internship) for the 2026 Summer Semester to perform the duties listed below.

Archaeological Field and Curation Intern

Location:

Roxbury Heritage State Park, 183 Roxbury St., Boston, MA 02119

Start/End Date: 6/1/2026 - 8/14/2026

Salary Rate: $0.00 (UNPAID Student Internship)

10 hours

Number of Openings: 1 position

This internship is unpaid and designed to support students or recent graduates seeking practical experience in the field. Interns may be eligible to earn academic credit through their college or university.

General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities

The Archaeological Field and Curation Intern will assist DCR Archaeological staff in limited field excavation projects at several DCR properties and will assist in the recording of DCR's archaeological collections from DCR managed properties.

Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities

The Intern will take part in archaeological field excavation projects, and visits to the Massachusetts Historical Commission for background research. The Intern will also examine bags of artifacts collected from DCR properties. Artifacts will be counted, cleaned, described, categorized, drawn, dated, and photographed. The collected data will then be used by the intern to add to our collections database.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills
  • Experience in Anthropology, Archaeology, or Museum Studies.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, Word, etc.
