Marine Biologist (ASM) – Boston, MA
Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) is seeking an At‑Sea Monitor to work aboard commercial fishing vessels across New England and the Mid‑Atlantic. The role supports the National Marine Fisheries Service (NEFCS) by collecting and recording biological, vessel, and gear‑selectivity data for the groundfish industry.
Key Responsibilities- Record detailed information on fishing activity, gear types (trawl, gillnet, longline, handline), and incidental take of marine mammals, seabirds, and turtles.
- Collect and log data on fish catch, discard, and related metrics.
- Work on vessels ranging from 20‑ to 100‑foot in length on trips lasting 1 to 14 days.
- Complete a 3‑week paid in‑person training in Falmouth, MA.
- Maintain compliance with sampling protocols, safety procedures, and data quality standards.
- Starting pay: $19.00 per hour.
- Eligible for an additional $4.57 per hour for the first 40 hours each week if enrolled in H&W benefits, totaling $23.57 per hour.
- Full‑time position with yearly earnings between $35,000 and $55,000, depending on deployment availability and sea days.
- Benefits include health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits, data quality bonuses, service awards, fitness center reimbursement, and a candidate referral bonus.
- Travel reimbursed at hourly rate, personal vehicle mileage compensation, and per diem at the specified government rate.
- High school diploma required.
- Experience with computer data entry.
- U.S. citizenship or legal authorization to work in the U.S.
- Physical fitness as certified by a licensed physician.
- Own transportation.
- Commitment to the program for at least one year.
- Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field with at least 30 biology credits and 6 marine science credits.
- Undergraduate coursework in math or statistics.
- Prior at‑sea experience.
- Coursework in Dichotomous Keys.
- Experience collecting field data and entering databases.
