Position Summary /
Department Summary:
We currently have one position open to study a wide range of research topics including cell‑based treatment of diabetes/obesity and intestinal stem cell differentiation. We are seeking highly motivated, curious, and enthusiastic individuals with excellent problem‑solving skills. Responsibilities include quantitative PCR, Western blot analysis, immunofluorescence staining, flow cytometry, and cell culture. Basic laboratory skills are required and experience in a previous lab is a plus.
Working occasional weekends may be warranted.
Specific Area of Research:
Intestinal stem cells, intestinal hormones, organoid culture
- Isolate intestinal crypts from patient biopsies when needed for new organoid lines
- Perform general cell culture work, including human intestinal organoids, mouse intestinal organoids, and human intestinal cell lines. Once sufficiently trained, will help with organoid differentiation experiments and infection of organoids with lentivirus for over‑expression and CRISPR knock‑out studies
- Perform general laboratory experiments (initially supervised): RNA isolation, PCR, quantitative PCR, western blots, immunofluorescence staining, and flow cytometry
- Use web‑based design tools to create novel CRISPR and over‑expression lentiviral plasmids
- Analyze and interpret experimental results to help determine the need for repeat studies
- Organize data into graphs for presentation which will be shown and discussed at weekly lab meetings
- Maintain an organized and thorough lab notebook that records protocols, results, and analysis
- Perform literature searches to help with the designing of new experiments (especially with using new cell culture materials, ie small molecules or viruses)
- Contribute to the writing and editing of new manuscripts
- Support general lab operations (ie, assist in purchasing supplies and maintaining stock solutions)
Education:
- A bachelor’s degree in STEM is required, master’s degree a plus but not required
- One year of work experience is required.
- Previous experience in a basic science laboratory.
- Have a background using basic mathematical and scientific principles to solve problems
- Have a background in using effective oral and written communication skills in a team setting
