The Research Nurse, in collaboration with the physician, is responsible for implementing and evaluating clinical research within their specific program or area. They possess expert knowledge of cancer or a comparable non‑oncology field and the process of conducting medical clinical research. The role utilizes evidence‑based nursing practice and involves developing and coordinating a plan of care to meet the physical, psychological, and social needs of cancer patients and their families participating in clinical trials.
Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills are required, along with a commitment to continued learning.

PrimaryDuties and Responsibilities Administrative
- Assist principal investigator with protocol development, review, and budget.
- Collaborate with DFHCC QA office to develop protocol‑specific materials.
- Serve as research coordinator for National Cancer Institute, pharmaceutical‑sponsored, and National Cooperative Group protocols.
- Assist with recruitment and registration of patients to clinical trials.
- Coordinate scheduling of patient laboratory, radiographic, admissions, and clinic visits.
- Monitor test results as appropriate and coordinate protocol data management.
- Collaborate with institute staff and outside organizations to complete clinical research trials.
- Coordinate study enrollment, protocol treatment, and completion of study requirements for patients.
- Work collaboratively as an effective member of the health‑care team.
- Collaborate with Care Coordination for patient care referrals and with the primary nurse to meet patient care needs.
- Provide protocol education to patients and families, adapting interactions based on age‑specific needs.
- Collect and prepare specimens for analysis, monitor results, document in charts, and communicate findings to investigators and physicians.
- Provide protocol in‑service training and serve as a resource to the health‑care team.
- Monitor the environment of care focusing on patient safety and regulatory compliance.
- Maintain evidence‑based clinical practice in line with nursing policies, licensure requirements, and professional standards.
- Participate in QA/QI projects for the clinical program and the Division of Nursing and Patient Care Services.
- Adhere to the ANA Code of Ethics and foster an environment sensitive to diverse populations.
- Administer medications as necessary and maintain BLS certification.
- Identify areas for growth and formulate goals and methods for achieving them.
- Pursue active membership of local and national professional organizations.
- Support research activities within the Division of Nursing and Patient Care Services.
- Participate in division committees and meet annual evaluation requirements.
- Collaborate on professional reports, articles, and presentations.
Education:
Associate degree in Nursing (Baccalaureate strongly preferred; BSN completion required within 4 years for Associate degree holders).
Experience:
1 year of recent RN experience; ambulatory and/or oncology experience preferred.
Licensed as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts or New Hampshire. AHA BLS required (ACLS accepted). Preferred professional nursing certification: OCN, BMTCN, CPHON, AOCNP, CRNI, RN‑BC.
