This is a 36 hour evening position 2pm-2:30am weeknights.

Responsibilities

As a member of the Acute Psychiatry Service (APS) Provider Team, the Advanced Practice Provider will assume the role of responding clinician in the assessment and care of patients with psychiatric and substance use disorders, including diagnosis, treatment, education, and management of the patient, in particular the patient awaiting admission to a psychiatric inpatient facility. The patient may be evaluated or seen in follow-up while in the APS, the main ED or an associated observation/boarding unit.

  • Prescribes medications.
  • Determines level of care needs for patients and initiates referrals, transfers, and consultations as needed for behavioral health and substance abuse disorders.
  • Participates in and facilitates quality assurance and performance improvement activities for evaluation of structure, process, and outcome criteria as it relates to clinical practice.
  • Identifies factors contributing to outcomes, such as complications, increased length of stay, and over utilization of services and actively participates in problem solving these issues, in collaboration with appropriate staff.
  • Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural setting.
  • Performs complete histories and physical examinations.
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings.
  • Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes, and discharge summaries.
  • Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population.
  • Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 2 years advanced practice experience, strongly preferred, in adult mental health.
  • Bachelor’s and Master’s in Nursing Required – Adult Psychiatric Mental Health.
  • Master Physician Assistant Required – Adult Psychiatric Mental Health.
  • Current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner/ Physician Assistant – Adult Psychiatric Mental Health in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Current federal and state-controlled substance certification/registration.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) – State License.
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse – APRN (MA) preferred.
  • Experience as a nurse practitioner 0-1 year preferred.
  • Skilled in taking medical histories to assess medical condition and interpret findings.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.
