Overview
Venous Access Nurse responsibilities include vein assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care for a complex patient population. The venous access nurse provides patient and family education and psychosocial and emotional support. He/she is a member of a multidisciplinary care team that requires effective communication and collaboration with co-workers and staff at the Institute, BWH, and other collaborating institutions and agencies.
The role requires IV clinical expertise, vein assessment, and the ability to make recommendations to providers for other access devices based on the vein assessment, critical thinking, and collaborative practice within a cancer center. The nurse supports line care maintenance and troubleshooting, knowledge of vein preservation principles and techniques, excellent communication skills, and an understanding of the principles and practices of clinical research.

Responsibilities- Provide vein assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care for a complex patient population.
- Offer patient and family education and psychosocial and emotional support.
- Collaborate as a member of a multidisciplinary care team with effective communication across the Institute, BWH, and collaborating institutions and agencies.
- Identify personal professional goals and learning needs.
- Demonstrate IV clinical expertise, assess veins, and make recommendations to providers for other access devices based on vein assessment.
- Apply critical thinking and collaborative practice as a venous access nurse within a cancer center.
- Maintain and troubleshoot line care; apply knowledge of vein preservation principles and techniques.
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills and understanding of clinical research practices.
- IV clinical expertise and ability to assess veins.
- Ability to recommend appropriate access devices based on vein assessment.
- Strong critical thinking and collaborative practice within a cancer center.
- Line care maintenance and troubleshooting skills.
- Knowledge of vein preservation principles and techniques.
- Excellent communication skills and understanding of clinical research principles.
