Overview

The Registered Nurse is a professional nurse registered in Massachusetts who is responsible and accountable for planning and providing patient care for assigned patients in accordance with Nursing Standards of Care as set forth in the Nursing Department's Clinical Practice Manual. The Registered Nurse demonstrates initiative, knowledge and clinical skills in caring for patients with complex needs. The Registered Nurse demonstrates the ability to effectively manage patients by assuming full responsibility for the assessment, plan, implementation and evaluation of patient care and is directly responsible to a designated nurse manager or supervisor.

For newly licensed nurses, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing is required.

Essential functions include organization of patient care, quality of care, coordination/collaboration, education, research, budget, and personnel responsibilities, with emphasis on safe, evidence-based nursing practice and collaboration with the health care team.

Education and credentials indicate the requirements for this role, with Massachusetts RN licensure and relevant experience for ED Level I trauma preferred. ACLS/BLS are required, along with ongoing professional development and adherence to hospital policies and standards.

Responsibilities
  • Organization of Patient Care
    • Accountable for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating a plan of care for a specific patient assignment.
    • Set priorities when organizing care for patients with varying acuity.
    • Maintain continuity through clear and concise verbal and written communication.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of growth and development for adult and geriatric patients; in areas such as NICU and Obstetrics, growth and development concepts apply to neonates.
  • Quality of Care
    • Document patient care in a manner that is clear, complete, concise and in compliance with nursing documentation standards.
    • Develop a comprehensive plan of care based on data from initial assessment, information from other health team members, intra-agency referrals and previous medical records.
    • Develop a comprehensive educational plan for the patient and family, using appropriate resources and documents according to department standards.
    • Develop a comprehensive discharge plan utilizing appropriate resources and referrals including community resources.
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of the plan of care and document progress; revise as needed to achieve outcomes.
    • Participate in unit-based and organizational quality management or quality improvement programs.
    • Provide a safe environment for patients, staff, family and visitors.
    • Administer medications safely according to policies and procedures.
    • Perform nursing procedures safely and efficiently using appropriate equipment.
    • Demonstrate awareness of infection risks and modes of transmission; utilize universal precautions in nursing practice.
  • Coordination/Collaboration
    • Interact with patients, families and colleagues professionally.
    • Collaborate with other disciplines.
    • Develop, utilize and evaluate unit-specific standards of care.
    • Uphold the ANA code of ethics and serve as a role model to staff.
    • Participate in determining and implementing unit goals and objectives.
    • Serve on unit-based and organizational committees and disseminate information to peers.
  • Education
    • Take responsibility for personal and professional growth by identifying learning needs.
    • Share knowledge and experience with colleagues.
    • Participate in unit-based and organizational educational programs.
    • Seek guidance for additional learning needs.
  • Research
    • Utilize nursing research findings in clinical practice.
    • Contribute to nursing or medical research by supporting investigators.
  • Budget
    • Use time and materials efficiently and economically.
    • Suggest approaches that support cost-effective health care delivery.
    • Assess patient acuity to inform staffing, transfers and assignments.
    • Demonstrate awareness of budgetary boundaries.
  • Personnel
    • Participate in orientation of new staff and students as appropriate.
    • Provide input into clinical evaluation of other staff as appropriate.
    • Assume responsibility for the unit in the absence of leadership personnel.
    • Adhere to hospital and nursing policies and aid in their interpretation to others.
    • Recommend policy and procedure changes through appropriate channels.
    • Support cooperative efforts and peer flexibility for unit operations and patient assignments.
Qualifications
  • Education
    • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required.

  • Licenses and Credentials
    • Massachusetts Registered Nurse required.
  • Experience
    • 2+ years current ED Level I trauma preferred. ACLS/BLS required.
