Purpose and Scope

The Inpatient RN provides direct patient care in accordance to company policies and procedures which includes FMCNA compliance programs and contracted hospitals’ policies and procedures. Areas of practice are diverse, including, but not limited to, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapies, apheresis, and ultrafiltration. The Inpatient RN will partner with the hospital to provide quality care to the patient and deliver care that provides a positive patient experience.

Principal

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Under limited supervision, applies considerable knowledge to perform a broad range of tasks including direct patient care in multiple modalities not limited to hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, ultrafiltration, CRRT, and apheresis.
  • Provides supervision and direction of Patient Care Technicians and clerical staff; directs and educates ICU staff for CRRT.
  • Responsible for direct patient care of assigned patients in the Inpatient Renal Replacement and Apheresis Services setting and providing the appropriate treatment technique as prescribed – hemodialysis, peritoneal, CRRT, ultrafiltration, and apheresis.
  • Assesses patients’ responses to treatment and makes necessary adjustments; communicates problems or concerns to the Inpatient Program Manager, appropriately credentialed physician, patient hospital primary nurse and others as indicated.
  • Delivers safe, effective care promptly; gives organized shift reports and adjusts patient schedules to meet the needs of more critical patients.
  • Responsible for the implementation, administration, monitoring, and documentation of patient response to prescribed intradialytic transfusions; notifies physician and blood supplier of adverse reactions as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with physicians and other healthcare team members to interpret, adjust, and coordinate daily patient care plans for continuity of care.
  • Initiates and communicates with FMS facility nursing staff and hospital personnel as needed.
  • Documents all treatment information in ACES and hospital records as needed.
  • Cleans and disinfects dialysis machine surfaces, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments per policies.
  • Performs tasks necessary for dialysis preparation and documents appropriately; conducts pre-treatment machine alarm testing.
  • Operates related equipment safely; uses supplies efficiently to prevent waste.
  • Performs dialysis/apheresis machine safety tests, alarm tests, calibration, dialysate testing, and disinfection; complies with documentation standards per FMS policies.
  • Participates in QAI activities, staff meetings, and staff training/orientation as assigned.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert to hospital staff for dialysis-related patient/equipment issues.
  • Reports all new or unusual incidents per Adverse Event Report requirements; may be assigned to in-center patient care as needed.
  • Reviews and complies with Code of Business Conduct and applicable policies, local/state/federal laws.
  • Assists with projects as assigned by direct supervisor.
