The Clinical Research Nurse (CRN) works in a strategic role within the Maternal/Child HIV Program and serves as a Research Coordinator in the Section of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Boston Medical Center (BMC). This role integrates clinical and educational services, leading prenatal and pediatric HIV activities and facilitating access to appropriate research protocols for the BMC population.
Position SummaryKey responsibilities include maintaining leadership in prenatal and pediatric HIV care, educating HIV‑positive women about antenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum programs, and managing the transition of mothers and infants to the Pediatric Infectious Disease Clinic. The CRN identifies eligible clinical study subjects, obtains medical histories, gains informed consent, performs phlebotomy and specimen processing, and ensures research activities adhere to good research practices.
ClinicalResponsibilities
- Provides direct patient care and education for HIV/AIDS and pregnancy; assesses patients, collects data, and develops appropriate care plans.
- Follows up with the Maternal and Child HIV/AIDS Team and participates in departmental quality assurance reviews.
- Coordinates follow‑up care in person and by telephone, working with pharmacy and the /AIDS team on medication orders and prescriptions.
- Conducts initial assessments and intakes, gathering social, medical, mental health, substance abuse, and medication histories.
- Collaborates with Pediatric to implement protocols, maintain protocol integrity, monitor participant safety, and educate clinical staff and participants.
- Assists with recruitment and retention of research subjects, ensuring understanding and adherence to protocol participation.
- Drafts consent forms, data collection forms, budget worksheets, and IRB applications as needed; coordinates screening, enrollment, and scheduling of procedures.
- Completes, evaluates, and submits case report forms to sponsors on time; performs consistency checks, error edits, and ensures timely data submission.
- Manages the clinical research database and coordinates sponsor site‑visit audits, preparing required records and responding to audit reports.
- Ensures IRB and pharmacy involvement per BMC policies and provides technical supervision to laboratory and data staff.
- Communicates clearly and concisely in writing and speaking, documenting patient care data in compliance with policies.
- Collects pertinent data using appropriate assessment techniques.
- Adheres to hospital standards and regulatory standards (FDA, sponsor, OHRP, etc.) to provide excellent customer service and patient care.
- Follows infection control and safety procedures and uses the hospital’s values to guide decisions.
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program. Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
- Massachusetts licensure as a registered nurse.
- Maintain RN staff competencies annually.
- Phlebotomy certification in pediatric and adult populations.
- LDMS certified.
- Bio‑hazard shipping certification.
- Certification from an accredited clinical research program.
- 3–5 years clinical experience required.
- 1–2 years research experience required.
- Proficient with Word, Excel, and Access.
- Ability to input, analyze data, and generate reports.
- Strong interpersonal, patient communication, and education skills.
- Capable of collaborative work across academic and clinical departments.
- Advanced knowledge of research regulations and compliance requirements, including Protection of Human Subjects.

Compensation Range$31.97–$46.39 per hour (range based on minimum qualifications). Total compensation includes base pay, bonuses, benefits, and other incentives.
