Boston Medical Center Department of Pediatrics is seeking Physician Assistants (PA) or Nurse Practitioners (NP) to be part of a team of Advance Practice Providers who provide care under the supervision of an intensivist physician to critically‑ill patients in both our Level III Neonatal ICU (22 beds) and Pediatric ICU (4 beds). The NICU is staffed 24/7 by an in‑house intensivist providing direct supervision to APPs.

The PICU is staffed by pediatric intensivists who are in‑house during the day and may be at home or in‑house overnight depending on acuity and the needs of the patients and unit. APPs overlap with Boston Children’s combined residents to provide frontline care to our patients.

We are seeking energetic team players to join our staff. Experience in the NICU or PICU is not required, but preferred. A full‑time equivalent equates to 40 hours / week including administrative time. Administrative time includes handoffs, division meetings and involvement in unit‑based projects. Clinical shifts are centered around nights and weekends. Following training in both the NICU and PICU, the APP will be assigned shifts in both locations.

At no time will an APP care for patients in both units during a single shift.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interview patients and families and perform physical examinations.
  • Develop problem lists, differential diagnoses, and treatment plans.
  • Determine abnormal conditions by administering or ordering diagnostic tests and interpreting results.
  • Place and modify care orders.
  • Complete documentation for admission, daily, and discharge notes.
  • Interface with multidisciplinary team members.
  • NICU: attend deliveries alone and with the NICU attending.
  • Provide consultations for Newborn Nursery as requested.
  • Implement physician directives.
  • Round with the team.
  • Provide ongoing patient assessment and intervention.
  • Consult specialty and surgical services under direction of attending MD.
  • Coordinate discharge including follow‑up appointments, equipment, and discharge teaching.
  • Perform therapeutic procedures appropriate to unit following training (e.g., central line placement and removal, arterial line placement, chest tube placement, endotracheal intubation, procedural sedation).
  • Protect patients and employees by adhering to infection‑control policies and protocols.
  • Comply with federal, state, and local legal and professional requirements.
  • Participate in continuing education, quality improvement, patient safety initiatives, educational conferences, and research studies.
  • Respond to Pediatric Rapid Responses and Pediatric Codes outside the PICU/NICU.
  • Participate in unit patient safety and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Keep abreast of advances in patient care.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Graduate of an accredited and/or approved nurse practitioner or physician assistant program.
  • Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner licensure within the first 3 months following application.
  • Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner Certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications.
  • Previous pediatric experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to assess neonates through young adults.
  • Interpersonal skills needed for interacting effectively with physicians, staff, patients, and families.
