Associate Executive Director – Roxbury Job Description
Under the leadership and direction of the Executive Director, the Associate Executive Director is responsible daily for creating a transformative Y Experience for our members, program participants, and employees at the Center as well as supporting Centers within the operations group. The Associate Executive Director must lead and manage people to deliver exemplary customer service, high‑quality programs, and clean, well‑maintained facilities and equipment.
The Associate Executive Director must be or become a subject matter expert and innovator in the core Y programs, including membership, health and wellness, aquatics, sports, family programming, and any additional Center‑specific programs.
The Associate Executive Director will support the successful execution of the YMCA of Greater Boston’s strategic imperatives to be a charity, partner, and employer of choice for years to come. Innovation will be a key area of growth, and the Associate Executive Director will oversee employee development and initiative execution.
Future development:
The Associate Executive Director is groomed for the Executive Director role, receiving coaching, board and fundraising experience, and leadership training.
- Bachelor’s degree in exercise science, human services, recreation, business, or a related field, plus three years of related experience or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Five or more years of management experience, preferably in a YMCA or other not‑for‑profit agency.
- Ability to direct assigned operations—including volunteer development, staff supervision, budget development and monitoring, marketing and public relations, and program development/management.
- Demonstrated cross‑functional work across operations groups and teams.
- Ability to coach team members both at the Center and across the operations group.
- Demonstrated supervision and coaching of managers and leaders.
- Preferable knowledge of or experience with core Y programs such as membership, health and wellness, aquatics, sports, family programming, and any branch‑specific programs.
- Ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations.
- YMCA Multi‑Team/Branch Leader certification preferred.
- CPR, First Aid, and other program‑specific certifications required upon or after hire.
In accordance with the policies, by‑laws, and constitution of the YMCA of Greater Boston, the Associate Executive Director is solely responsible for the Y Experience in their branch and supports a high‑quality Y Experience across the Centers in the operations group. This includes ensuring customer service and high‑quality programs across all departments and branches.
Key functions and responsibilities:
- Supervision – Manages 5–7 direct reports and oversees the day‑to‑day operations of the Center.
- Customer Service and Experience – Trains, coaches, and holds staff accountable to exemplary service across all programs, responding promptly to member feedback.
- Membership and Program Enrollment, Growth and Experience – Drives membership and program enrollment while ensuring a high‑quality Y Experience measured by net‑promoter scores and other metrics.
- Facility Usage – Oversees usage of facility spaces, troubleshoots scheduling conflicts, and coordinates external rentals.
- Fiscal Management – Develops an annual budget, meets revenue targets, forecasts quarterly, and corrects financial deficiencies promptly.
- Youth Development – Works with the Child Development department to ensure a positive experience for children and parents and leads all‑center meetings.
- Innovation – Develops innovative solutions for branch and association‑wide opportunities and challenges.
- Safety – Leads center safety operations, ensures compliance with policies, monitors risks, and manages emergencies.
- Board Development and Fundraising – Leads community fundraising campaigns, supports board leadership and volunteer participation, and gains board and fundraising experience.
- Marketing and Community Engagement – Represents the Y in the community, promotes membership, drives internal marketing efforts, and engages on social media.
- Performance Achievement – Manages hiring, coaching, compliance, and weekly connections to advance OKRs and career development.
- Trends – Stays current on trend identification and its implications in areas such as service demographics, competitive analysis, special events, membership, health and wellness, youth and family programs, and other branch programs.
Additional duties:
Participate in all requested meetings, lead association‑wide initiatives, and work one evening per week with flexibility for occasional events.
