Job Description

This position co-manages the Longwood EHS office and is responsible for the leadership and management of the Longwood EHS occupational, building, facilities and construction safety programs. In this role, this person interacts regularly with executive and senior level academic and operational managers from all schools and units but specifically, Harvard Medical School (HMS), School of Dental Medicine (SDM) and Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH).

This person participates in the strategic and operational leadership of the University-wide safety programs, as well as, the implementation of dedicated EHS services for the Longwood campus schools, units, and University partners. This person develops University-wide policies, standards and technical resources to ensure for the compliance and safe work practices in University research, facilities and construction operations. Works closely with senior management, academic and operational personnel to communicate regulatory and university standards, develop program systems and content and provides performance and risk-related metrics to inform senior management priority setting and decision-making.

Directly manages staff in the technical and operational delivery of EHS Designated Safety Officer (DSO) and Construction & Renovation (CR) service models. Works closely with campus senior academic and operational managers to develop and implement local EH&S programs and ensure program effectiveness and compliance. Develops and manages annual expense and cost recovery budgets for safety programs and services. Participates on the EHS senior management team in direction, financial planning and goal setting for Department-wide initiatives.

Job‑Specific

Responsibilities
  • Acts as the senior occupational/facilities/construction safety manager on the Longwood campus and provides safety services primarily to Harvard schools/units in the Longwood geographical area. Supports safety services anywhere in the University as a senior manager of the schools DSO and CR team.
  • Oversees the development and delivery of the DSO/CR service model for Longwood campus. Services include development and maintenance of Safety/Compliance Management Plans, EHS (school/unit) operations calendars, training programs, inspections, compliance reporting, technical evaluations, management systems development & similar functions.

    Ensuring the regular submission of top-quality EHS Service Update reports, seasonal communications and metric reports to track program success.
  • Leads Longwood senior academic and operational management in the development and implementation of University-wide occupational safety programs, policies/procedures and documentation to ensure compliance with Federal, State and local regulations.
  • Responsible for the development of customer relationships and deeper understanding of the EH&S needs for Longwood-based Harvard units. Develops and maintains high trust working relationships with key clients in Longwood area.
  • Participates on the EHS senior management team in direction, financial planning and goal setting for Department-wide initiatives. Evaluates, recommends & implements University-wide policies & procedures to assure awareness of, & implementation with EH&S requirements. Conducts strategic regulatory analysis to identify risks and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Provides leadership to management, technical and operational staff in the Longwood EHS office. Supervise direct reports - including mentoring, development planning, performance management (reviews, planning, etc.), salary action planning, setting short-term and long-term standards and goals, and leadership to ensure the integrity and success of the team.
  • Works with Associate Director of Workplace Safety to ensure the overall financial integrity of the Longwood safety function, including fee for service model as well as core funding and group budget/expenses.
