OverviewThe Associate Vice President & University Controller (AVP & Controller) leads the accounting records of Boston University, providing accurate financial reporting and ensuring robust internal controls. The role reports to the Vice President, Financial Operations and oversees a team of more than 65 staff across multiple departments.
Responsibilities- Lead the accounting staff and operations, including maintenance of the accounting records system and production of financial reports.
- Develop and supervise staff, including formulation of development plans for managers.
- Design, maintain, and staff an organizational structure to achieve departmental goals.
- Review month‑end close reporting, prepare board committee presentations, and provide routine and ad‑hoc financial analysis.
- Oversee preparation of consolidated financial statements, footnotes, and Management Discussion & Analysis in accordance with GAAP.
- Serve as liaison with external auditors and lead all external financial audits (Financial Statement, Uniform Guidance, NCAA, UFR, etc.).
- Establish an internal control environment related to financial information and accounting for university assets.
- Participate as committee member for subsidiary, task force, and working group activities with internal and external partners.
- CPA qualified and master’s degree (MBA, MSA or equivalent).
- 12+ years of experience in financial accounting management, preferably in higher‑education or public accounting, with at least five years in a supervisory role.
- Seven years of higher‑education audit experience with managerial responsibilities is an acceptable substitute.
- Subject‑matter expertise in internal controls, compliance, and GAAP.
- Strong communication, negotiation, influencing, and critical‑thinking skills.
- Excellent analytical skills and experience with complex processes & systems; knowledge of report‑writing applications.
- Demonstrated success in managing staff and office operations with strong leadership and team‑building skills.
- Effective time‑management and planning abilities in a fast‑paced environment.
- Self‑motivated, proactive, intellectually curious.
- Extensive experience with SAP, Oracle, People Soft, Banner, ERP, Campus Solutions or similar enterprise‑wide accounting software.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
