Deputy General Counsel – Renewable Energy (US)
About the Opportunity
A rapidly growing, international renewable energy developer is seeking an experienced Assistant General Counsel to support its expanding U.S. operations. The U.S. business is scaling quickly and operates as part of a larger global group with entities in Europe and private‑equity backing. This role will serve as a senior member of a small but highly capable in‑house legal team.
As the company continues to grow, this hire will help build a strong internal legal function, reduce reliance on outside counsel, and provide strategic legal leadership across a broad range of commercial, transactional, and corporate matters.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide senior‑level legal support for U.S. operations, serving as a trusted advisor to executive leadership and cross‑functional teams.
- Lead and negotiate complex procurement, project development, and tax equity transactions within the renewable energy sector.
- Manage and execute M&A, joint venture, and strategic investment activities, including diligence, structuring, and negotiation.
- Oversee and refine legal processes to support rapid business growth, including contract management, compliance frameworks, and risk mitigation practices.
- Collaborate closely with the General Counsel (US) and Associate General Counsel to develop scalable internal legal capabilities.
- Manage relationships with external counsel, ensuring cost‑effective and high‑quality support.
- Provide guidance on corporate governance, regulatory matters, financing structures, and other issues relevant to renewable energy development.
- Support cross‑border coordination with parent‑company legal teams.
Qualifications
- Approximately 10-15 years of legal experience, with significant time spent in renewable energy, infrastructure, or project‑focused sectors.
- Expertise in procurement, tax equity financing, M&A, and complex commercial transactions.
- Strong background in drafting and negotiating a wide range of project and corporate agreements.
- Experience working with both internal stakeholders and external counsel.
- Ability to operate effectively in a fast‑growing, entrepreneurial environment with evolving processes.
- Strong business acumen and the ability to balance commercial priorities with risk management.
- Admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
What They Offer
- Opportunity to join a high‑growth, mission‑driven renewable energy platform backed by international investors.
- A senior leadership role with visibility across the organization.
- Ability to shape the legal infrastructure of a scaling U.S. business.
- Collaborative, international work environment with significant opportunity for impact.
