Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell is looking for a highly motivated person to join her team as an Assistant Attorney General in the Attorney General's Fair Labor Division. The Fair Labor Division (FLD) investigates and enforces the Massachusetts wage and hour and other laws governing fair labor standards and public construction bidding laws under Chapters 149 and 151 of the Massachusetts General Laws and related regulations.

The candidate for this position will be primarily responsible for enforcing violations of labor standards under M.G.L. Chapter 149, M.G.L Chapter 151 and other related regulations and statutes.

Responsibilities
  • Enforce Massachusetts labor standards, including statutes addressing non-payment of wages, overtime, minimum wage, child labor, public construction bidding, prevailing wages, labor trafficking, and related statutes.
  • Maintain an active case load and prosecute violations in civil, criminal, and administrative proceedings.
  • Participate in community engagement initiatives, including making public presentations to employers and employees concerning wage and hour laws.
Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and admission to the Massachusetts Bar.
  • At least three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in the practice of law.
  • Massachusetts Bar eligibility at the time of application; must apply for admission before start date. Candidates not yet admitted may be hired as ‘Counsel’ and must pass the Massachusetts Bar within one year of start date.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience or interest in protecting the rights of vulnerable populations, civil enforcement of labor standards, or criminal litigation in district and superior courts including grand jury.
  • Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills; ability to develop novel legal strategies to combat wage theft.
  • Working knowledge of Massachusetts labor and employment laws; ability to advise staff and the public on legal matters by interpreting relevant statutes and case law.
  • Ability to educate about laws, rules, and policies governing Office operations; investigate and adjudicate cases involving public construction bidding violations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to adapt to changing situations and priorities; comfortable spending time on the telephone and virtual platforms.
  • Discretion with confidential information, sound judgment, problem-solving abilities, and strong organizational skills plus proficiency in Microsoft Office; ability to work independently and as part of a team under deadlines.
  • Language fluency in Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, or other languages is desirable.

This position may be based in the Boston, New Bedford, or Worcester Regional Office. Office location will be determined based on the candidate’s expressed preference and space availability.

Salary: $3,472.16 to $5,065.55/bi-weekly. Salary is determined by procedures outlined in applicable collective bargaining agreements and personnel procedures.
