OVERVIEW

Brain Works is currently seeking a Senior Analytics Engineer (IoT Data Platform) for a full‑time, hybrid opportunity in Boston, MA. Our client is a fast‑scaling, IoT‑enabled food & beverage technology company building a connected hardware + software platform used across thousands of customer locations. As the organization scales, they are prioritizing the modernization and modeling of their streaming IoT data platform to support proactive machine maintenance, quality initiatives, and AI‑driven insights.

This is a senior‑level, hands‑on analytics engineering role focused on transforming high‑volume, event‑driven IoT data (sensors, UI interactions, and intake events) into scalable, production‑grade, business‑ready data models.

The right candidate combines strong modeling expertise with platform architecture thinking and thrives in complex, real‑time data environments. This role is foundational to the company’s strategic initiative to move to predictive, data‑driven operations
.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Own the modeling and transformation of three core IoT data domains:
Hardware (machine sensor data) Software/UI (clickstream‑style touchscreen interactions) / Consumption (event‑based data)
  • Transform raw, streaming JSON event data into structured, scalable, analytics‑ready datasets within Snowflake using DBT.
  • Define appropriate aggregation strategies (e.g., 5‑minute, hourly, daily) balancing cost, usability, and performance.
  • Model and operationalize at least two of three priority IoT datasets, ensuring they are fully structured, documented, and enabled for self‑service analytics
  • Productionize a minimum of one IoT dataset to support scalable deployment and downstream machine learning readiness
  • Partner with Software, Hardware, Product, and Operations teams to translate business needs into robust, production‑grade data solutions.
  • Act as a senior technical peer in shaping data governance, role‑based access, permissions, and sandbox vs. production environments.
  • Establish and enforce best practices in DBT modeling, documentation, versioning, and cross‑team maintainability.
  • Support and enable downstream AI/ML initiatives by building clean, well‑structured IoT data layers.
  • Contribute to scalability as the company grows 5x by preventing knowledge silos and strengthening platform maturity.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 5-8 years of experience in analytics engineering, data engineering, or similar hands‑on data roles.
  • Strong experience modeling event‑driven, time‑series, or streaming‑style datasets.
  • Advanced SQL expertise and strong Python skills.
  • Proven experience transforming messy/raw data (e.g., JSON event streams) into structured, production‑grade models.
  • Deep understanding of DBT best practices and modern ELT architecture.
  • Experience working in cloud data platforms (Snowflake strongly preferred).
  • Experience designing scalable data models for self‑service analytics and AI/ML use cases.
  • Exposure to governance, permissions architecture, and sandbox vs. production environments.
  • Ability to operate as a senior peer and thought partner on data platform architecture decisions.
NICE TO HAVE
  • Digital analytics / clickstream modeling experience.
  • Familiarity with Kafka, Influx, or streaming ingestion frameworks (collaboration‑level knowledge; this role does not manage streaming infrastructure).
  • Experience working with ML production models or enabling ML‑ready data layers.
  • Background in complex, high‑growth, event‑heavy data environments.
  • Experience working with IoT‑enabled hardware systems in food & beverage, industrial equipment, robotics, or other connected device environments.
