The Patient Care Assistant II functions as a member of the patient care team, under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN), and proficiently and consistently performs all aspects of the PCA role. The PCA II is responsible for supporting the RN with clinical tasks, including but not limited to blood glucose monitoring, completing EKGs, applying simple dressings, using aseptic technique and responding to medical emergency situations utilizing Heartsaver CPR and AED skills.
The PCA II responds to the needs of patients and family members and takes an active role in the efficient operation of the unit, ensuring the practice of the Patient and Family Centered Care Model.

Responsibilities- PROVISION OF A SAFE ENVIRONMENT:
Anticipates patient safety risks and takes action to reduce risks; routine patient room rounds; follow/maintain restraint policies under nurse supervision; 1:1 monitoring for at-risk patients; follow infection control and safety procedures; use proper body mechanics. - ORGANIZATIONAL ETHICS:
Maintain an atmosphere reflecting organizational mission/values; respect a culturally diverse staff and patient population; provide non-judgmental, respectful care; protect confidentiality; resolve interpersonal conflicts; wear appropriate a Patient Care Assistant. - MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES:
Organize time and prioritize patient care; assist coworkers; adapt to changing unit needs; coordinate break periods with the Charge Nurse/Nursing Supervisor; maintain visibility on the unit. - MANAGEMENT OF INFORMATION:
Know and follow policies, procedures, and work rules; understand hospital emergency codes; use hospital e-mail for minutes/notices; participate in staff meetings/in-services; communicate with RN about patient condition and task status; accurately collect and record patient data and comply with documentation standards. - COLLABORATIVE INTERDISCIPLINARY:
Maintain and foster a teamwork approach to patient care. - PATIENT/FAMILY
EDUCATION:
Provide information to patients and families; orient patients/visitors; reinforce patient education provided by the nurse; give basic care guidance (call light use, positioning, transfers, walking, toileting, feeding). - COMPETENCY:
Adhere to standards and regulations; demonstrate competency in skills including external monitors, CPM, EKGs, blood glucose monitoring, dressings, and Heartsaver CPR/AED; assist in orientation of new staff; support floating staff as needed. - QUALITY IMPROVEMENT:
Participate in SEAQ programs; communicate concerns about quality of care to leadership. - PATIENT CARE:
Complete assigned patient care tasks per policy, including admissions/discharges/transfers, transport, personal care, skin care, elimination assistance, nutrition support, vital signs, intake/output, specimen handling, and end-of-life care as appropriate; ensure room readiness and inventory, respond to call lights, and maintain orderly patient rooms.
Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent required
Licenses and Credentials
Certified Nursing Assistant/Patient Care Technician (CNA/PCT) – various issuers;
Heart Saver CPR AED – American Heart Association required
Experience / Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
• Certified Nursing Assistant or current Nursing Student with Fundamentals of Nursing or equivalent clinical rotation.
• Adherence to ICARE standards.
• Successful completion of an approved nursing assistant training program.
• English language proficiency (reading/writing).
• Ability to pass clinical competency, basic math and reading testing.
• Ability to perform basic math calculations for measurements (height/weight, intake/output, calories).
• Ability to interpret and use basic medical terminology; entry/retrieval of computerized information.
