Overview
Under supervision, performs non-invasive diagnostic tests for cardiovascular diseases to support quality patient care. The Echocardiographer is responsible for preliminary echo cardiographic measurements, summarizing diagnostic data, and communicating information to the manager or requesting physician. Performs a variety of technical duties using phono-apex cardiograms, imaging duplex and ultrasound equipment.
Responsibilities- Performs a variety of technical duties required in non-traumatic, non-invasive examinations using phono-apex cardiograms, imaging duplex and ultrasound equipment.
- Positions patients and operates equipment to produce the most reliable and informative data.
- Explains procedures to patients.
- Evaluates as recording occurs and performs complete analysis.
- Interprets exams and charts graphics as needed and processes hard copy results.
- Assists with managing the daily work-flow by performing portable exams.
- Performs advanced technical responsibilities consistent with level of skills.
- Performs stress echo examinations and dobutamine echo examinations.
- Performs vascular studies when needed and Holter Monitor analysis for cardiac arrhythmias or abnormalities.
- Performs cardiac stress tests under direct physician supervision.
- Prepares the patient for stress test, including electrode placement, and explains/demonstrates the test to patients.
- Observes patient, records and calculates all necessary parameters, and interprets Electrocardiogram tracing for diagnostic purposes.
- Prepares and maintains a record system for patient examination results.
- Provides guidance in performing echocardiograms to technicians, fellows and students.
- Provides guidance and direction to EKG Technicians in the absence of the Manager.
- Maintains department records, reports and files as required and performs charge entry into the hospital billing system.
- Maintains a safe work environment, proper body mechanics, and follows infection control and safety procedures.
- Demonstrates courteous, professional, and respectful interactions with patients, visitors, physicians and staff.
- Maintains care appropriate to adult and geriatric age groups regularly served and seeks assistance for non-regular age groups as needed.
- Keeps work area and equipment in good condition and maintains appropriate inventory of supplies.
- Supports professional growth through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops.
Education requirements include knowledge of Cardiology, Medical Terminology, basic Physics, Biology and Anatomy to perform tests and interpret raw data. Typically a two-year program in a related field (e.g., cardio sonography technical training).
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations- Certification or eligibility for registration with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in echocardiography is strongly preferred.
- Prefer at least one year of experience in echocardiography (not including as an intern) in a hospital facility.
- Knowledge of congenital heart disease.
- Knowledge of general cardiography and hospital procedures, sonography equipment, and proficiency in performing technical work.
- Analytical ability to solve problems of limited technical complexity and ability to follow standardized methods and procedures.
- Strong interpersonal skills to explain procedures and allay patient apprehension; ability to interact with physicians, team members, staff and patients’ families.
- Basic computer proficiency to access, enter and interpret computerized data.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of personal/health information.
- Bilingual or multilingual skills appropriate to the patient population served are a plus.
Compensation Range
$31.97 - $46.39
