Position: Float Medical Assistant I

Job Summary

As a Medical Assistant, you support healthcare teams by handling both clinical and non‑clinical patient services. Responsibilities include taking vital signs, documenting patient information, scheduling appointments, managing patient flow, and interacting with patients to ensure comfort. You collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, and nursing staff to facilitate efficient care.

Essential Functions
  • Assists junior Medical Assistants with day‑to‑day questions and helps facilitate learning by participating in onboarding training.
  • Shows patients to examination rooms, prepares necessary equipment for healthcare providers, and interviews patients to obtain medical information, measure vital signs, weight, and height, and records information in the patient’s medical record.
  • Explains treatment procedures, medications, diets, and physician instructions to patients and orders and organizes educational materials to reinforce patient education.
  • Performs general office duties such as answering phones, taking dictation, and completing insurance forms while acting as a liaison with other departments and advocating for patients with a positive customer service approach.
  • Collects blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, logs them, and prepares them for testing; performs phlebotomy if competence is demonstrated.
  • Maintains inventory of immunizations and checks expiration dates.
  • Provides immunizations (as applicable) which requires certification or 3 years of experience administering a vaccine and supervision of a provider.
  • Improves appropriate departmental quality initiatives such as two patient identifiers and hand hygiene.
Qualifications Education
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
  • Associate’s Degree in Medical Assisting preferred.
  • No experience in lieu of a degree.
Licenses & Credentials
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification – preferred.
  • Certified Medical Assistant (National Certification) – preferred.
Experience
  • Direct MA experience or medical field work 1‑2 years required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks in complex and busy environments.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Complies with all local, state, and federal privacy and confidentiality rules and regulations.
  • Ability to take vital signs and manual blood pressure, and collect blood samples and other specimens.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology, procedures, and protocols.
  • Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems and medical office software.
  • Uses logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Manages one's own time and the time of others.
