The Nursing Informatics Specialist is a member of the Nursing and Epic Operations teams and is responsible for ensuring clinical information system implementations are consistent with Dana‑Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) standards of nursing practice. This position reports to the Associate Director of Nursing Informatics and participates in oversight of system implementations for Nursing and Patient Care Services for Ambulatory Pediatrics. The role supports a shared governance model that advances professional practice for Nursing and Patient Care Services.

The Nursing Informatics Specialist integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, and knowledge in nursing practice. She/he facilitates integration of data, information, and knowledge to support patients, nurses, and other providers in decision‑making roles and clinical settings.

This role supports stabilization and continuous improvement of the Epic electronic health record (EHR) implementation and other systems as needed. The specialist works collaboratively with nursing, physician, and pharmacy leads, DFCI and Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) Epic leadership, Application Business Analysts, Credentialed Trainers, and others involved in the EHR. The specialist represents nursing roles in providing clinical knowledge related to content, workflow, training, and communication, identifies issues, develops mitigation plans, and makes for improvement in partnership with the Epic team.

The specialist also serves as a liaison from the Epic program to nursing, aids in creating and presenting clinical content at stakeholder meetings, and supports strategic and quality goals of the nursing department and institute.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides expert content knowledge and end‑user feedback to DFCI and BCH Epic leadership on workflows, content, prioritization, and potential future development options.
  • Collaborates with Epic program leadership, nursing end‑users and leadership to identify, prioritize, and evaluate Epic workflows, content, and functionality.
  • Advocates for and proposes recommendations to specialized or cross‑functional work groups to remediate challenges and improve workflows and content.
  • Provides feedback on recommended changes, including impact, communication and education required.
  • Investigates identified issues and proposes mitigation or resolution recommendations with DFCI and BCH Epic application coordinators/analysts.
  • Provides expert knowledge regarding clinical, regulatory, and operational needs as part of documentation requirements.
  • Analyzes and tests multiple solutions to resolve issues or problems.
  • Evaluates the quality and effectiveness of implemented solutions.
  • Solicits feedback from clinicians on Epic topics or concerns from nurses and clinical leadership.
  • Escalates challenges to leadership as appropriate.
  • Creates documentation to support end‑user understanding of functionality and workflows, including tip sheets, eLearnings, training presentations, and general communications.
  • Supports participation in the addition of Pediatrics to the DFCI Adult Nursing Informatics Committee.
  • Presents Epic updates at various Nursing and Patient Care Services forums.
  • Works with application business analysts to define business needs, document workflow, perform workflow analysis, develop automated or technical solutions, and provide feedback.
  • Participates in DFCI workgroup meetings related to Epic and other clinical information systems implementation.
  • Represents nursing interests on institute‑level committees and task forces.
  • Participates in Epic feedback forums, including customer site visits and reference calls.
  • Participates in nursing and organizational policy formulation and decision‑making related to technology.
  • Assesses and supports use of system downtime tools, workflows, and policies.
  • Collaborates with nursing leadership on quality metrics for clinical applications.
  • Supports development and evaluation of report data for nursing leadership.
