Position: Pharmacy Technician I

Position Summary

Working under day‑to‑day supervision of pharmacists and Pharmacy Leadership, the technician is responsible for the proper handling of medications. Key duties include receiving, distribution, inventory management in Pyxis, compounding, filling orders, delivering, and stocking. The role requires excellent communication skills and a desire to work in a fast‑paced environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Works Under The Supervision Of
    • Pharmacy Leadership
    • Pharmacists
  • Ordering / Receiving
    • Assists with receiving orders from wholesaler
    • Scans in delivery
    • Ensures all items are received and scannable; involves pharmacist when appropriate
    • Makes written requests for low‑stock items
    • Repackages bulk to unit‑dose when necessary
  • Compounding
    • Performs dosing calculations, unit conversions, admixture volumes
    • Prepares clean‑room and sterile products area for daily use
    • Follows clean‑room policies and aseptic technique
    • Prepares low‑ and medium‑risk sterile and non‑sterile compounds
  • Inventory Management
    • Checks expiration dates in and outside the department
    • Credits and debits patients in Meditech for reordered or returned medication
    • Resolves missing medication issues
    • Performs monthly floor inspections to ensure medication integrity
    • Labels medications properly; disposes of hazardous substances, sharps, and expired meds
    • Assists in semi‑annual inventory activities as needed
  • Fills Medication Orders
    • Receives labels and orders; accurately selects drug, dosage form, and strength
    • Retrieves medications from ADC fill list and organizes them for checking
    • Refills trays and kits (code trays, STEMI kits, anaphylaxis kits, tackle boxes)
    • Accurately fills OR machines
  • Delivers medication
    • Performs routine rounds to patient care areas in a timely manner
    • Delivers meds to ADC, Med Room, or nurses as requested
    • Updates machines with current drug date; overdrafts meds in ADC at delivery
    • Returns meds from floors when needed
  • Fills Automated Dispensing Cabinet (ADC)
    • Understands loading and unloading process
    • Fills ADC accurately using scanner when required
    • Loads meds neatly without overfilling pockets
    • Troubleshoots minor ADC equipment issues; reboots equipment as necessary
  • Communication
    • Provides exceptional customer service; resolves issues
    • Answers phone and triages calls requiring a pharmacist
    • Communicates effectively with nursing and staff outside pharmacy
  • Professionalism
    • Maintains a high degree of professionalism inside and outside the department
    • Develops strong working relationships; dresses professionally
    • Keeps work area neat, clean, and organized; represents Pharmacy Department as liaison
    • Complies with HIPAA policies; supports training of new staff; manages time effectively
  • Maintains Logs
    • Documents daily logs accurately (refrigerators, hood cleaning, eye wash)
    • Reports omissions or errors
  • Handle Controlled Substances
    • Ensures accurate record keeping, handoffs, and reporting of concerns to pharmacist or supervisor
Job Requirements
  • Knowledge & Skills
    • Excellent written and oral communication
    • Basic math for compounding
    • Teamwork and problem‑solving skills
    • High level of customer service to patients, visitors, and staff
  • Education & Experience
    • CPhT certification and state registration (maintained)
    • Completion of required educational modules (e.g., Steward University)
    • Performance of Gloved finger‑tip and media fill test when required
Compensation

Day and evening shifts with every other weekend required. Salary range: $22.83–$33.92 per hour.
