Food and Nutrition Rep – Per Diem, Rotating Weekends and Holidays

Boston Medical Center (BMC) is seeking a dedicated Food and Nutrition Representative to provide individualized meal service and support patient nutrition on a per diem schedule. The role requires strong food handling skills, patient interaction, and the ability to maintain cart operation and inventory within a fast‑paced environment.

Position Summary

The Food and Nutrition Rep transports, operates and maintains the Retherm thermal tray cart and companion cart, assembles patient meal trays following diet orders, and collaborates with nursing and dietary staff to ensure accurate patient information. The incumbent records food, refrigerator and freezer temperatures daily, monitors cart temperature and sanitation procedures, and delivers nourishment supplies as ordered to patient floor units.

Responsibilities
  • Assemble meal service cart with all food items and condiments to match menu and diet orders.
  • Adhere to safe food handling practices and maintain food temperatures.
  • Program and operate cart to refrigerate, heat, and hold temperatures of food; notify supervisor of equipment malfunctions.
  • Transport cart without assistance to patient units within scheduled time while avoiding damage.
  • Consult with nursing staff about meal service changes; refer complaints to Patient Services Manager or Dietary Supervisor.
  • Prepare cart food items; match serving utensils to menu items; record hot and cold food temperatures at start and end of meal service.
  • Greet patients, communicate menu choices, demonstrate knowledge of food served, and refer to dietician for medical questions.
  • Assemble meal trays, arrange food attractively, deliver trays, and verify patient satisfaction before exiting rooms.
  • Collect meal trays, discard waste, clean and sanitize carts, trays, and utensils, and reset cart for next service.
  • Conduct Patient Satisfaction Survey per shift; record answers and forward surveys to Patient Services Manager.
  • Provide clerical support: answer telephone courteously, maintain accurate patient data, and enter diet information using Computrition software.
  • Deliver nourishments and floor stock; maintain par levels; rotate stock and record temperatures daily; keep supplies stored orderly.
  • Prepare infant and adult formulas, shakes, and tube feedings using a blender following written recipes and instructions.
  • Assist orientation of new staff, demonstrating basic duties and providing on‑the‑job training.
  • Follow BMC behavioral standards, report to work clean and neat, and wear authorized uniform.
  • Adhere to hospital infection control, safety procedures, HACCP guidelines, and all mandatory employment requirements.
Job Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED (preferred).
  • Minimum two years of experience in food service/customer service; patient feeding experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of nutrition, diets, recipes, food preparation and service.
  • Fluent written and verbal English; strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to follow federal, state, local regulations, and JCAHO requirements for sanitation and food handling.
  • Capable of lifting up to 40 lbs and transporting the meal cart without assistance.
  • Walk and stand 95% of the time; satisfy fit test for N95 respirator mask.
Compensation

Base Pay: $18.58 – $22.20 per hour. Total compensation includes benefits such as medical, dental, vision, pharmacy, 403(b) matching, paid time off, and other resources to support employee wellness.
