Job DescriptionThe Medical Assistant at Daniel Driscoll Neponset Health Center in Dorchester assists providers by preparing patients for visits, collecting and recording vital signs and medical histories, performing laboratory tests, and supporting other clinical duties.
Responsibilities- Prepares patients for provider visits by obtaining and documenting vital signs, height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiration, oxygen saturation, pain assessment and vision screening when required.
- Obtains a medical history by asking patients questions about new or changes to medical conditions, medication review, allergy review and documents appropriately in EMR.
- Performs and documents screening assessments in EMR such as tobacco screening, HSQ (depression screening), domestic violence screening.
- Performs and documents all Point of Care CLIA Waived lab testing in the lab area. Tests included A1C, fingerstick glucose, urine dipstick, rapid strep, rapid flu, urine drug screen.
- Performs necessary daily quality control testing on designated point of care tests.
- Assists patient with portal enrollment.
- Answers patient portal messages as needed.
- Assists the providers with simple non-nursing procedures and acts as a chaperone when necessary.
- Under the direction of a provider, assists with routine patient nursing and non-nursing follow-up.
- Assists in the orientation, evaluation and training of new staff to the department.
- Stocks exam rooms as needed using central supply inventory processes and transfers to appropriate exam room.
- Disinfects patient touching equipment after every patient use, cleans and disinfects each exam room thoroughly after each clinic and documents completion.
- Replaces sharps containers in each exam room when three quarters full with a new sharps container and transports full sharps container to designated bio-hazard area.
- Routinely stocks and cleans rooms, orders necessary supplies as needed and in coordination with nursing leadership.
- Assures continuity of patient care by tracking and obtaining outstanding lab and test results for all patient visits.
- Performs EKGs as ordered by providers.
- Performs additional tasks such as Telederm and Retina Vue processes as ordered by providers.
- Assists providers during sessions by copying and faxing patient care documents as assigned by provider or nurse.
- Answers department telephone line and task box, if appropriate.
- Assists quality improvement efforts within the department as assigned.
- Collaborates with other department staff to ensure patient access and continuity of care.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Medical Assistant certification from an accredited program or a permitted substitution as appropriate.
- Current BLS (Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers) certification.
- Bilingual capability (English/Spanish, English/Vietnamese, English/Portuguese preferred).
- Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
- Experience using EMR (EPIC/OCHIN) highly desired.
- Successful completion of 1 year of an accredited Nursing Degree Program.
- 2 years of college level health care related science courses with healthcare experience in a hospital or healthcare setting.
- Current CNA certification (state registration) or Adult Education Medical Assisting Certificate Program with healthcare experience in a hospital or healthcare setting.
- Completion of Nursing Assistant or Home Health Aide training program with healthcare experience in a hospital or other healthcare setting.
- Current National Medical Assistant certification with 2-3 years of experience as an MA, CNA or in direct patient care, with experience within the last ten years.
- Current EMT certification.
