Looking for a Medical Assistant – Co‑Op Student to join Atrius Health, a leading health‑care provider in eastern Massachusetts.

Under direct supervision, the Medical Assistant assists clinicians with routine procedures, ensures pre‑visit work is complete, updates the electronic medical record (EMR), and delivers high‑quality patient service.

Summary

Assists clinicians with routine clinical procedures and tests in the exam room, advises patients on preparation and testing required for exams, ensures all pre‑visit work is completed and that lab and other test results are available in the EMR, and strengthens the patient‑clinician relationship through timely and informative interactions.

General Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides efficient flow of patients to optimize appointment availability.
  • Greets and escorts patients to exam rooms and measures vital signs.
  • Assists clinicians with routine clinical procedures and additional tests specific to the department.
  • Ensures electronic medical record (EMR) is updated with medical information, including recent testing and consultations.
  • Keeps patients informed of visit status and unforeseen delays.
  • Verifies and updates patient medical information in the EMR, reconciles medications, sets up pending refills, and discontinues prescriptions that are no longer active.
  • Encourages and assists patients in MyHealth enrollment.
  • Assists in resolving minor patient concerns and complaints as appropriate.
  • Orders and performs point‑of‑care testing on patients; follows quality control procedures and reports test values in the EMR.
  • Places orders for appropriate lab and imaging tests under clinical direction.
  • Prepares, cleans, and maintains exam rooms, equipment, and supplies.
  • Answers backline calls and consults with other departments on internal problem resolution.
  • Assists patients with scheduling referrals, follow‑up appointments, and pre‑visit labs.
  • Provides backup coverage for other support staff and assists new staff with orientation.
  • Participates in care improvement activities such as RIEs, VSAs, and MDIs.
  • Sorts and manages clinician mail and screens MyHealth messages.
  • Generates clinical correspondence such as letters regarding medical necessity for Medicare and outreach on lab work.
  • Orders supplies for the department and maintains the stock room.
  • Functions as a Medical Secretary I as needed and performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities

None

Education / Licenses / Certifications

High School diploma or equivalency certificate (e.g., GED, HiSET, TASC) from an accredited institution or governmental unit. Medical Assistant Certification required. American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) may be required based on specialty. Student in an undergraduate program required.

Experience

Computer experience required with the ability to use word processing and spreadsheet programs.

Able to use all electronic tools and applications relevant to the performance of the duties of the position, including but not limited to phone, keyboard, computer, and computer applications. Performs all job functions in compliance with applicable federal, state, local and company policies and procedures. Accesses only the minimum necessary protected health information (PHI) and actively protects the confidentiality and privacy of PHI in all its forms.

Complies with all Atrius Health and departmental privacy policies, procedures and protocols and follows HIPAA privacy guidelines.

Working Conditions / Physical Demands

Busy office environment with frequent deadlines and interruptions. Frequently moves among exam rooms, transports supplies and equipment, and escorts patients.

Compensation
