The Retail Pharmacy Technician provides technical support under supervision of a licensed pharmacist in the outpatient/retail pharmacy, including medication preparation, compounding, inventory management, using pharmacy equipment and technology, drop‑off/pick‑up window duties, quality control tasks, training/orientation, and bedside delivery to patients.
Essential Responsibilities- Renews routine/maintenance medication requests (telephonic, fax, patient site, E‑prescription queue) and manages administrative responsibilities for non‑electronically routable prescriptions.
- Responds to formulary and medication assistance program inquiries, prioritizing efforts effectively and safely.
- Assists with BIDMC transition of care program.
- Assists with medication reconciliations.
- Investigates and resolves prescription issues and communicates directly with patients, providing clarification on directions for prescriptions.
- High School diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- License:
Massachusetts Registered Pharmacy Technician preferred, or Pharmacy Technician Trainee required, or Certificate 1 Certified Pharmacy Technician preferred. - 1–3 years related work experience in Healthcare or Retail Pharmacy.
- Knowledge of prior‑authorization workflows, payer relations, prescription claims adjudication, and general reimbursement procedures.
- Ability to develop strong relationships with diverse professional groups.
- Experience with computer systems, including web‑based applications and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
- Experience with prior authorizations.

- Problem Solving – address routine problems and identify opportunities for process improvements.
- Independence of Action – follow precedents and procedures, set priorities.
- Written Communications – communicate clearly and effectively in written English.
- Oral Communications – converse in English to communicate effectively with medical staff and patients.
- Knowledge – demonstrate working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures, and policies.
- Team Work – collaborate in small teams to improve operations.
- Customer Service – provide high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff, and external customers.
Light work:
Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. The job may require standing for periods of time or moving throughout the hospital campus.
$26.00 – $34.99 per hour (base hourly wage). Compensation may exceed the base rate based on seniority, education, training, experience, location, and additional pay practices.
