Position SummaryThe Voice and Swallowing Center at Boston Medical Center seeks a full‑time Speech‑Language Pathologist (no clinical fellows) to conduct comprehensive assessments of adult inpatients and outpatients with swallowing and related disorders. Responsibilities include clinical swallowing evaluations, modified barium swallow (MBS) studies, flexible endoscopic evaluations of swallowing (FEES), high‑resolution pharyngeal manometry (HRM), alaryngeal management, videostroboscopy, and speech, language, and cognitive evaluations. The role also involves patient education, interdisciplinary collaboration, continuing education, and departmental research.
Experience with MBS and FEES is preferred.
- Conduct speech‑language pathology evaluations per professional and departmental guidelines.
- Respond to all consults in the assigned area within 24 hours and complete evaluation and documentation within 72 hours.
- Review patient records, gather necessary information, and obtain a physician’s order before assessment.
- Select and administer appropriate evaluation procedures, adapting them as needed for patient needs.
- Interpret results, develop integrated diagnostic impressions, and make recommendations.
- Perform re‑evaluations in accordance with departmental policies, changes in patient status, or response to treatment.
- Educate patients and caregivers on findings and care recommendations.
- Establish measurable short‑ and long‑term treatment goals in collaboration with patients or caregivers.
- Modify goals as warranted by changes in patient status.
- Communicate patient care and discharge needs to team members, arranging appropriate follow‑up.
- Implement comprehensive individual and group treatment, demonstrating clinical competence and problem‑solving skills across diverse patient populations.
- Maintain accurate documentation and billing, comply with institutional policies and regulatory requirements, and pursue ongoing professional development.
- Participate in mandatory department meetings, task forces, and committees; accept additional assignments as required.
- Supervise speech‑language pathology students, providing orientation, training, and performance evaluations.
- Avoid hazardous situations, seek assistance when necessary, and uphold the hospital’s values, infection control, and safety procedures.
- Master’s degree in Speech‑Language Pathology from an accredited institution.
- Current Massachusetts license and ASHA certification; CPR certification required.
- ASHA membership and ongoing licensure renewal.
- Experience with FEES and MBS (preferred).
- Bilingual or multilingual abilities beyond English are a plus.
- Strong interpersonal, analytical, and communication skills; ability to work collaboratively within an interprofessional team.
