Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Ultrasound Manager and Lead Ultrasound Technologist, the Ultrasound Technologist provides skill and initiative to the department’s mission through interactions with staff, manager and others as necessary. The ultrasound technologist’s primary duties are to generate diagnostic sonographic images for the radiologists, while also implementing policy and procedures as determined necessary through the manager and lead technologist.

Essential Responsibilities / Duties
  • Performs a wide variety of exams as required and necessary for proper departmental workflow.
  • Assists physicians during sterile invasive procedures (e.g., biopsies, aspirations, thoracenteses, intraoperative procedures).
  • Prepares exam room and ultrasound equipment to conduct sonography examinations in accordance with infection control, sterilization, and patient safety protocols, policies, and procedures.
  • Completes exams in a timely fashion while providing quality scans for Radiology and outside departments.
  • Prepares patient for exams as required and ensures patient comfort and modesty at all times; assumes responsibility for the safety of the patient during the sonographic exam.
  • Follows all departmental established and appropriate policies and procedures; sets up equipment as necessary and uses proper patient positioning and technique to ensure comfort and safety.
  • Performs duties in all areas of the department, including all campuses and outside the hospital when appropriate for the mission.
  • Works schedules as required through regularly scheduled hours or overtime as necessary for department needs.
  • Ensures that exams requested match patient condition and/or history and calls or consults appropriate persons for additional information.
  • Provides appropriate views and films to radiologists and offers additional views or variations of techniques as required.
  • Maintains equipment uptime through interaction with management and service vendors; keeps exam rooms clean, tidy and ready for use.
  • Performs patient‑focused customer service and ensures high standards of communication and professionalism.
  • Monitors patient conditions during exams and facilitates appropriate nursing or other assistance when needed.
  • Operates electronic systems such as PACS, RIS, Epic, etc., efficiently.
  • Ensures documentation, requisition completion, and billing requirements are properly performed.
  • Adheres to hospital infection control, safety procedures, and BMC’s RESPECT behavioral standards.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned or required.
Education

Associate’s degree (or equivalent from a two‑year college) or certificate program in diagnostic medical sonography must be obtained prior to hire.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations Required

American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) – OB, AB, or RVT. Accreditation must be attained prior to hire (except for OB/GYN, one year to obtain accreditation).

Experience

Experience in related clinical area is preferred.

Knowledge And Skills

Knowledge of principles and procedures of ultrasound and the operation and maintenance of ultrasound equipment. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients, coworkers, students and physicians.

Special Working Conditions

24/7 coverage is required; staff may need to work overtime or cover other shifts outside of their own. The department is part of a full service academic medical imaging department for both adult and pediatric patients, using advanced technology to deliver exceptional and equitable care.
