Overview
This is a full-time, overnight pharmacist position (schedule structure is seven consecutive days staffing, followed by seven consecutive days off) based out of central pharmacy. The pharmacist will provide both clinical and operational services for MGH acute care patients and will interface with the clinical pharmacy team and the operations team. The pharmacist will be primarily based out of the Medical ICU and Surgical ICU at MGH and will interface with the Critical Care pharmacy team and the Overnight Pharmacist team.
Clinical Pharmacists assume responsibility and accountability for the provision of safe, effective, and prompt medication therapy. They provide direct patient-centered care and integrated pharmacy operational services with physicians, nurses, and other hospital personnel to deliver optimal medication therapy for a broad range of disease states. They are aligned with target interdisciplinary programs and specialty services to deliver medication therapy management and ensure pharmaceutical care programs are integrated throughout the institution.
Services include assessing patient needs, incorporating age and disease-specific characteristics into drug therapy and patient education, adjusting care based on patient response, and providing clinical interventions to detect, mitigate, and prevent medication adverse events. They serve as departmental resources and liaisons to other departments, hospital personnel, or external groups, and manage the appropriate use of medications according to professional and regulatory standards.
They conduct practice-related research and participate in patient care quality and regulatory compliance initiatives to improve medication-use processes or pharmacy practice. They provide medication and practice-related education/training and serve as preceptors for pharmacy residents and Doctor of Pharmacy students.

Licenses and Credentials- Pharmacist [State License] - Massachusetts
- Controlled Substances Registration (MCSR) - Massachusetts Department of Public Health preferred
Experience working as a pharmacist 2-3 years preferred
Required Qualifications- Must be eligible for licensure to practice pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
- Board Certification by examination, or equivalent certification, in the relevant specialty is preferred upon hire, and required within 18 months of hiring
- Must meet all Board of Pharmacy requirements to enter into a collaborative drug therapy management agreement, when applicable
- Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration license, National Provider Identifier number, and a Drug Enforcement Administration Registration number, when applicable
- Postgraduate residency/fellowship training is preferred
- Completion of ASHP-accredited PGY1 with critical care experience or a PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of IV admixtures, Drug Information, Ambulatory, Manufacturing, and Drug Distribution
- Attention to detail
- Ability to assess and address patient data relative to age-specific needs across neonate, pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations
- Ability to work relatively independently and participate in department quality improvement efforts
- Experience in training medical, nursing and allied health professionals
- Must complete 20 continuing education credits per year to maintain license
- Familiarity with pharmacy practice settings, regulatory requirements, prescription information and calculations, drug identification and generic equivalents, drug manufacturing, packaging and labeling, and proper drug handling and storage
- Provide care per the department’s policies and procedures
- Knowledge of contemporary hospital/clinical practice and service
- Understanding of general hospital operations and regulatory compliance
